On Saturday, fans were able to get their first official look at the 2012 USC Trojans team that they will be cheering on in earnest during the fall. The intrasquad game resulted in a win for the USC defense, who defeated the offense by a final score of 34-27.
Thanks to the fabulous reporting by Jordan Moore at the official USC Trojans blog, we have plenty of information about the annual spring game that took place on Saturday. The game ran a total of 91 plays. The defense racked up points by stopping offensive drives and forcing turnovers. An interception of a Matt Barkley pass helped as well. You can read all the details of the game here.
Moore broke down some of the key takeaways from the spring workouts. One of the points he addressed was the state of the backup quarterbacks.
Backup QBs - Kiffin did not name Matt Barkley's number two today, but both Max Wittek and Cody Kessler have been impressive. Kessler made the best throw of the day completing a 44-yard TD pass to Soma Vainuku. And in a surprise move, Jesse Scroggins, who sat out most of spring dealing with injuries and academics, led a series today. "It was definitely a learning experience," Kessler said about spring. "We're all competing at the same time and every day."
Barkley had a good day, completing 23 of 29 pass attempts for 212 passing yards, throwing a touchdown and an interception.
