It's still early in the season, but the USC Trojans may have hit rock bottom, falling to the UC Irvine Anteaters, 61-54, at the Galen Center Thursday night. The Trojans shot just 40 percent from the field and had 16 turnovers. Anteaters guard Damon Starring led all scorers with 23 points.
UC Irvine jumped out to a 37-25 first-half lead thanks in part to five three-pointers and only two points total that didn't come as the result of a layup, three-pointer or free throw. The Trojans tried making a run in the second half, but never got the lead closer than five points. Omar Araby (12 points) and Eric Wise (10 points) were the only Trojans in double figures.
The loss was the Trojans' sixth in their last seven games and dropped them to 4-7 overall. USC now travels to Athens, Ga., this Saturday to take on the Georgia Bulldogs. UC Irvine, 6-7 overall, hosts UC Davis on Dec. 29.
