NFL Mock Draft 2012: Matt Kalil Heads To Minnesota Vikings In Latest Projections

Matt Kalil appears to be a consensus top-five pick at this point and many feel he will be headed to either the Minnesota Vikings or St. Louis Rams. The USC Trojans standout spent the last few seasons protecting Matt Barkley and many feel he is the best offensive tackle prospect to come out in years. Armed with size, athleticism and a great football mind, whichever team selects him on April 26 will be getting a heck of a player.

According to Russ Lande of Sporting News, the Vikings will select Kalil with the No. 3 overall pick.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil*, OT, USC. The Vikings are committed to Christian Ponder as their quarterback of the future, but they need to find a left tackle to protect his blind side so he can develop.

Assuming the team is indeed dedicated to moving forward with Ponder at quarterback, it only makes sense to protect him, along with Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart. The Vikings have multiple areas of their team they would like to improve upon and could also look to select a wide receiver with their first round pick.
