The USC Trojans picked up their first convincing win of the season on Saturday night, a 38-17 victory over the Syracuse Orange in Los Angeles, and could find their way back into the AP poll top 25 when the college football rankings are released on Sunday. USC began the year ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press poll, but dropped to No. 28 after a lackluster opening win over Minnesota. The Trojans moved up to No. 27 in last week's poll.

Six AP top 25 teams lost this weekend:

  • No. 5 Florida State lost 23-13 at home to No. 1 Oklahoma
  • No. 15 Michigan State lost 31-13 on the road to Notre Dame
  • No. 17 Ohio State lost 24-6 on the road to Miami, FL
  • No. 21 Auburn lost 38-24 on the road to Clemson, snapping a 17-game winning streak for the Tigers
  • No. 22 Arizona State lost 17-14 on the road to Illinois
  • No. 25 Mississippi State lost 19-6 at home to No. 3 LSU on Thursday

Florida State isn't going to drop far for losing to top-ranked Oklahoma, and it's unlikely that Michigan State or Ohio State would drop out of the top 25 entirely. But with No. 21, No. 22, and No. 25 all falling, USC has the opening they need to get back into the top 25.

The Trojans are ineligible for the USA Today coaches poll.
