New UCLA Bruins football coach Jim L. Mora is trying to turn around a struggling program, and the turnaround attempt will begin with a freshman calling the signals. On Friday Mora named redshirt freshman Brett Hundley the starting quarterback.
Hundley beat out incumbent Kevin Prince, last year's backup Richard Brehaut, both seniors.
"Brett has consistently demonstrated the qualities we value in a starting quarterback and is an outstanding leader who commands the respect of his teammates," Mora said in a statement. "He has shown excellent decision-making skills, and his accuracy and timing continue to improve with each practice. In addition, he has shown the mobility and creativity needed when a play breaks down."
Hundley during his redshirt season won the "Coach K" team award for Academic and Athletic Balance, named for coach Ed Kezirian.
The Bruins had Friday off, but practice resumes on Saturday morning at Cal State San Bernardino, the first of two practice sessions on Saturday.
