The BCS seems to be dying. A college football playoff is headed our way.
Here seems to be the consensus proposal determined by the big college commissioners.

In other words, it might not always be the top four college football teams out there, particularly if there are worthy conference champions out there who also deserve mention. But in general, the emphasis will be to grab the top four teams based on their regular season performance, as well as utilizing numerous other criteria to see whether a conference champion or an at-large deserves the bid.
It's likely that bowl sites will be used for the semifinals in some manner, and the championship game will be bid to the highest suitor.
It's up to the university presidents to decide what type of playoff they'd want.
