Two UCLA coaches will be in a familiar setting when the Bruins travel to face Arizona State on Saturday. UCLA offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and running backs coach Steve Broussard coached at ASU last season.
After former ASU head coach Dennis Erickson was fired, Mazzone and Broussard joined the Bruins under new head coach Jim Mora. Mazzone admitted coaching against his former team was "going to be a little weird" but said he was focused on UCLA.
Mazzone has a relationship with many of the current Sun Devils players including starting quarterback Taylor Kelly. He tutored Kelly for his first two seasons at ASU, lauding his ability to run the offense despite not having elite physical attributes.
While it may be strange to be on the opposite sideline, just a year after coaching at ASU, Mazzone pointed out this won't be the first time as he's changed coaching jobs nine times. While the homecoming likely won't have much impact on the final score, Broussard did say it would be "a little emotional."
Both coaches said they are glad to see ASU doing well but were focused on coming away with the win.
