UCLA Bruins Football: Neuheisel Nearing Decision On Quarterback

The UCLA quarterback controversy has been well documented throughout camp this summer. It appears a final decision on who will start could be made in the very near future. Here is Adam Maya of The OC Register with the report:

Quarterbacks Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut continued to alternate first-team snaps Thursday. Prince had a much better day, particularly in leading the two-minute offense. He completed a handful of passes on a touchdown drive, which was capped off by a startling, one-handed catch by tight end Joseph Fauria in the back of the end zone.

Both players have had flashes of brilliance during camp, though neither has been able to achieve this success consistently.

After practice, Coach Rick Neuheisel said he will choose a starter "sometime early next week."

"I don't want to make it uncomfortable for anybody," Neuheisel said.

Though both quarterbacks said they'd prefer their coach make a decision soon, Neuheisel said he isn't concerned about it affecting their preparation.

"I don't worry about it," Neuheisel said. "They're both going to be ready to go. I'm not trying to be harsh on anybody. I'm just making sure both are continuing to improve."

With more than a week of practice remaining before the season, it does not benefit anyone if a decision is made quickly or earlier than it should.

When asked about playing both quarterbacks in the opener, something Neuheisel said Wednesday he hadn't ruled out, he replied, "I'll toy with that in my own mind. I don't have any real feeling of urgency with respect to that. Both have started. Both have played."

It sounds like the head coach does not plan on using both quarterbacks, though I guess no one will truly know until the season kicks off September 3rd. Until then, stay tuned.
