The AL Rookie of the year lost out on Major League Baseball's MVP award earlier this week to Miguel Cabrera.

The Legacy Awards are given out annually by the NLBM since 2000. Oscar Charleston was a center fielder and manager in the Negro Leagues from 1915 to 1945. He held a life time average of .353 and slugging percentage of .576. Charleston was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.

Much has been made of the phenomenal season Trout had as he put together one of the finest rookie campaigns in MLB history. Trout ended the year with a .326/.399/.564 split while hitting 30 home runs and garnering 83 RBIs and swiping 49 bases.

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen was awarded the National League's Legacy Award.

Angels CF Mike Trout discussed winning the AL Rookie of the Year, the MVP race, and a potential position switch during a conference call on Monday.

Angels outfielder Mike Trout spoke with the media during a conference call on Monday to discuss his amazing rookie season, his chances for post season awards, and a potential for a position change in the future. Trout was awarded the AL Rookie of the Year award on Monday in a unanimous vote, and may win the Most Valuable Player award over Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers, who won the Triple Crown.

On what winning both the Rookie of the Year and MVP what mean to him:

"It would just top it off. Coming into the year and coming into every year, my goal is to be the best player and to make the most impact as a player on the field. At the end of the year, just to be in the talk for MVP with these great guys like (Miguel) Cabrera, who hit for the triple crown, is an incredible feeling."

Trout hit .326 with a .399 on-base percentage, 30 home runs and 83 RBIs in 2012. He also stole 49 bases.

Trout was heralded for his defense, although he may move from center field to left field at some point in the future. His thoughts on that:

"I definitely like playing center field better, but if it will help the team win, I will play wherever (Mike) Scioscia puts me. Just being out there is all that matters."

Despite the amazing start to his career, Trout still thinks that there are things he could improve on:

"There’s definitely things to improve on and get better at each and every day. Coming in to spring, I want to try and stay healthy. The last couple of springs, it has been a slow start. The main thing is defensively, with arm accuracy. I’m going to work really hard in the spring to get that as high as it can be."

The Angels outfielder was named the American League Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

The rookie year for Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout continues to get better, even after it has ended. This afternoon, the Baseball Writers Association of America unanimously selected Trout as the American League Rookie of the Year. He finished on top with all 28 first-place votes, followed by Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes who garnered 19 second-place votes. Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish finished in third. Trout becomes the second Angel to win the award, after Tim Salmon took it home in 1993.

Trout made it easy on the voters, finishing the season with an astounding stat line. He hit .326/.399/.564 with 30 home runs, 89 runs batted in and 49 stolen bases which was best in the American League. He was also voted an AL All-Star and finished second in batting average to the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera. He also finished first in runs in addition to being near the top of every other offensive category in the league.

The rookie center fielder ran away with the AL Rookie of the Year award from SB Nation bloggers.

It should come as no surprise that a rookie who finished the year hitting .326/.399/.564 with 30 home runs, 83 runs batted in and 49 stolen bases was voted as the SBN AL Rookie of the Year. In fact, the Los Angeles Angels' own Mike Trout didn't just beat the rest of the candidates, he destroyed them.

Trout was the only player to get first place votes in the American League with 26 of them. The four guys behind him all play for a division rival with Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish and Oakland A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes in second and third place. A's pitcher Jarrod Parker and Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero rounded out the top five.

Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper picked up the SBN NL Rookie of the Year award, but it wasn't a clean sweep. Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Wade Miley picked up eight first place votes but was still well behind Harper in the total points tally.

The Baseball Writers Association of America will announce their picks at about 3:00 p.m. PST today.

Trout is the first rookie position player to win a Silver Slugger Award since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. Trout had an impressive rookie campaign, batting .326/.564/.399, driving in 83 runs, bashing in 80 home runs and knocking in 182 hits, which included 27 doubles and eight triples.

The Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Awards are considered the top offensive honor in Major League Baseball. Coaches and managers of Major League teams vote for the players they feel are the best offensive producers at each position in the field in both the American and National Leagues.

The Los Angeles Angels right-hander was recognized by Major League Baseball after carrying a staff that fell well short of expectations as a group.

Los Angeles Angels right hander Jered Weaver has been named a finalist for the American League Cy Young Award, according to Major League Baseball.

Weaver finished a stellar 2012 campaign with 20 wins and five losses, 142 strikeouts against just 45 walks, and added a 2.81 ERA in 188.2 innings pitched. The highlight of the season for the 30-year-old came when he threw a no-hitter against the Minnesota Twins on May 2, where he faced 29 batters and struck out nine.

Weaver was the lone bright spot on a pitching staff that failed to meet lofty expectations, as the Halos missed the playoffs in 2012.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America will hand out the prestigious award, among others, on live television for the first time next week on MLB Network. The announcement of the four biggest awards in baseball will take place on consecutive nights beginning Monday at 3:00 p.m. PT.

The awards set to be announced, in order of appearance, are Rookie of the Year, Manager of the Year, Cy Young Award and Most Valuable Player. Weaver's teammate, Mike Trout is a finalist for both the AL Rookie of the Year and the AL MVP awards.

Angels center fielder Mike Trout wasn't just nominated for the AL Rookie of the Year award, he was also a finalist for AL MVP.

After the best rookie campaign in recent memory, Angels center fielder Mike Trout should be cleaning up this awards season. Debuting in July of 2011, Trout showed glimpses of his elite talents and skills. But the 21-year-old from New Jersey took the league by storm in 2012, and has been named a finalist for both the American League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards.

Trout should have no trouble collecting the latter trophy, though A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and Rangers' pitcher Yu Darvish had great seasons for their clubs. The stiffer competition for the rookie comes in the MVP race: Robinson Cano, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre and Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera. Whatever your feelings on RBI and batting average as relevant statistics are, Mike Trout's numbers may have outdone Cabrera's landmark season.

Trout hit 30 home runs and led Major League Baseball with 49 steals and 129 runs. The center fielder's OPS of .963 was good for third in the majors. Though his offensive numbers alone should get him recognition, his defensive play has been lauded as well. Playing a tough position, Trout excelled in center field and became notorious for robbing home runs and nabbing balls headed for the gap. With this kind of all-around production, we might expect to hear Trout's name every awards season for the foreseeable future.

With more than a week before the American League MVP award is announced, the Players' Choice named its most outstanding player Monday.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim center fielder Mike Trout lost out to Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera on Monday in the Players' Choice voting.

Cabrera, who won the sport's first Triple Crown since 1967, edged out Trout in the voting for both player of the year and most outstanding player in the American League.

Trout was named outstanding rookie in the American League for his monster season. Despite not being called up from Triple-A until more than 20 games into the season, Trout led all of baseball with 10.7 Wins Above Replacement (according to Baseball-Reference.com's calculation); Cabrera was sixth in that metric despite playing in 22 more games than Trout.

Voting for the awards took place in September, according to the Associated Press.

Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen won the National League's most outstanding player award, as voted on by his peers. The two most outstanding pitchers were Tampa Bay Rays lefty David Price and New York Mets knuckleballer R.A.
