Williams was ejected for throwing a punch against Colorado. The conference has decided to not suspend him for next week's game with Arizona.

USC Trojans defensive tackle Leonard Williams was ejected from Saturday's game after throwing a punch at a Colorado player who spit on him. After reviewing tape from the incident, the Pac-12 has decided not to suspend Williams for next week's game against the Arizona Wildcats.

Before learning of the ruling, USC head coach Lane Kiffin did not say much about the incident at Tuesday's practice. According to him, he believed it was a confidential matter.

Even though the conference did not suspend Williams, Kiffin still could. Some believe he needs to discipline the freshman for his outburst, while others think he served his punishment by missing the rest of Colorado's game.

Regardless if whether Williams plays Saturday afternoon, the Trojans' defense is going to need to step up. The Wildcats are averaging nearly 40 points per game this season, and they just hung 52 on Washington last weekend. It will be the defense's first true test of the season.

Matt Barkley earned his sixth career Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honor after his performance versus Colorado.

University of Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley had a record-setting weekend versus Colorado that helped him earn Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors for the sixth time in his career.

Barkley received this honor four times in 2011 and once in 2010.

Barkley threw a school record-tying record six touchdown passes in the Trojans' 50-6 win over Colorado. He set a school and conference mark by completing 95 percent of his passes (19-of-20) while earning a passer efficiency rating of 319.2. The senior quarterback also became the Pac-12's all-time leader in passing touchdowns by throwing the 102nd score of his career.

For the season, Barkley has thrown for 1,773 yards and 22 touchdowns while completing 65.7 percent of his passes. Barkley ranks 10th nationally with a passing efficiency rating of 164.1.

The Trojans are ranked 10th in the BCS standings, and will travel to play Arizona this Saturday, before their Nov. 3 showdown against No. 4 Oregon.

USC quarterback Matt Barkley set a school and conference record for touchdown passes this weekend. But there are more milestones to achieve for Barkley and the Trojans.

Pass Matt Leinart for most touchdown passes in USC history:

Check.

Become new leader in the history of the Pac-10, 12, whatever, to throw most touchdowns:

Check.

Win a major bowl championship game:

We’ll see.

Matt Barkley dazzled in a fitting setting under the lights of Los Angeles in the Coliseum in the USC Trojans' 50-6 win over the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday, and became to be the first to throw 100 touchdown passes in the conference. He’ll be able to pass for even more as there are five (six with a bowl game) games remaining on schedule.

As remarkable as he’s been with USC under center, he’s still missing hardware to put him clearly on top in the school’s history: And he’ll probably never pass Leinart.

But that isn’t a knock on Barkley. Leinart is the most decorated quarterback ever to play the game in recent history, Tebow being a close second.

It’s unfair to compare Barkley to those two because he played during years where USC couldn’t play in a bowl game, or a championship game. But that can be added to his legacy.

USC is 6-1, 4-1 in conference. The hardest stretch of their schedule has now presented itself starting with a trip to Arizona where they will face Rich Rodriguez’s Wildcats, who have an explosive offense.

If Barkley wins over Arizona, Oregon, Arizona State, UCLA, and Notre Dame, that will be something. Winning the Pac-12 championship? Something else. Winning a major bowl game? Then I’ll place him on top of USC’s player ranks.

Leinart played with some of the most tremendous athletes to ever play college football, but Barkley is mostly responsible to lead his team on top with the NCAA sanctions firmly in the driver’s rear window.

Nobody believed USC would be where they are right now, being ranked No. 9 in BCS’s latest rankings playing with 10 players less than any other team that are in the top 10 of said rankings.

Depth has hurt the Trojan team in some areas, but the talent is there to overcome the majority of the pain. Most of that talent coming from the heralded Barkley.

If USC wins the Rose Bowl or the BCS championship, then it will be one of the greatest comeback stories in recent college football history, with Barkley at the helm.

Notes and Observations

50: USC scored 50 points for the first time this season. Shocking to hear when the media, and I, thought they would explode for more regularly. Maybe the Colorado blowout solved things, or maybe they just played "Colorado".

Robert Woods: As much as I showed my enamored love for Barkley, Woods was no slouch against the Buffs. It was his first 100-plus receiving yards game this season. When Barkley and Woods start playing catch in games like these, opponent’s defense strategy is at a loss. It was great to see the two hooking up again.

14: Number of interceptions USC has this season; third in the nation. Let’s give a round of applause to defensive technition and USC secondary coach, Marvin Williams. I’ve scrutinized Monte Kiffin’s cover schemes against the pass before, but when Williams first stepped on Howard Jones field, those schemes were more clear.

USC is playing more tight zone and man coverage. Whether it’s the personel or the coverage scheme, the defense has taken a big step forward overall; and it starts with Williams taking over the secondary.

With USC's win over Colorado and Arizona State's loss to Oregon, the Trojans moved into first place in the Pac-12 South Division.

There wasn't a whole lot of movement in the Pac-12 standings following this past week's action.

The USC Trojans moved to the top of the Pac-12 South with their 50-6 win over the Colorado Buffalos. The UCLA Bruins remained in fourth place with a 2-2 conference record, as they didn't play last Saturday with a bye week.

Both the Oregon Ducks and the Oregon State Beavers remained undefeated in conference play. The Beavers are off to the best start in the 105 year history of the school.

The Utah Utes lost to Oregon State to remain winless in Pac-12 play. The Washington State Cougars are also 0-4 but had a bye week.

There might not be much shake-up in the conference this week either. Many of the top teams are taking on some of the lower rungs of the Pac-12. USC vs. Arizona, Colorado vs. Oregon, Washington State vs. Stanford and Oregon vs. Washington won't provide much movement.

The Bruins however can climb to second in the Pac-12 South and third overall with a win at Arizona State on Saturday.

Matt Barkley is the most popular person in L.A. sports right now following his record setting performance against Colorado.

The Los Angeles area sports royalty took to Youtube to wish USC quarterback Matt Barkley congratulations after his record setting performance against the Colorado Buffalos on Saturday.

Chris Paul, Landon Donovan, Blake Griffin, Matt Leinart and Pete Carroll were among the host of stars that congratulated Barkley on setting the career touchdown record at USC.

Records were set left and right as the Trojans trounced the Buffalos 50-6. The big one was Barkley's 100th career touchdown pass. He is the first quarterback in USC and in Pac-12 history to reach that mark. He also set a new Pac-12 record for completion percentage as he went 19-for-20.

Wide receiver Robert Woods also broke the program's all-time record for receptions and single game record for touchdown receptions with four.

Ex-USC quarterback Carson Palmer came on the video to specifically not congratulate Barkley, but he did wish for him to beat the remaining opponents on the schedule to vie for a national title.

https://losangeles.sbnation.com/usc-trojans/2012/10/21/3535594/matt-barkley-video-usc-trojans-pac-12-touchdown-recordPeter Woodburn2012-10-21T14:35:34-07:002012-10-21T14:35:34-07:00There was much to be happy about in USC's win

Much of the talk from USC's 50-6 victory over Colorado will settle on the record setting performances by quarterback Matt Barkley and wide receiver Robert Woods.

Barkley became the first quarterback in USC and Pac-12 history to reach 100 career touchdown passes. Woods set a new record for career receptions for USC lore and also set the school's record for most touchdown receptions in a game with four.

As Conquest Chronicles writes, it was encouraging to see Barkley hook up with Woods, and to do it so often and so well. Barkley threw six touchdown passes and did it on a remarkable 19-for-20 attempts (a new Pac-12 record in completion percentage). Most importantly, Kiffin knew he was dealing with a questionable secondary and attacked it often and early.

Of maybe even greater note, Lane Kiffin opened up the playbook a little bit more and made it a point to just attack Colorado's secondary from the opening play. That's a good sign considering how many people were starting to really question Kiffin's decisions.

The defense, although it gave up 351 total yards of offense, still did a great job of keeping the Buffalos in check. USC forced six turnovers (three fumbles and three interceptions), which quickly killed any offensive momentum Colorado was able to muster. Conquest Chronicles writes that the USC defense has been underrated all year, and the victory over Colorado shows how strong the defensive unit is.

It wasn't all good though. The Trojans continued to struggle with penalties, committing 10 to a tune of 90 yards. The Trojans are ranked dead last in the nation in penalties, and it isn't a good sign to see so many at home against a worse team.

Against much better teams, you can't expect to commit so many mistakes and still find a way to win. The fact that they committed that many penalties against a subpar team at home is a little concerning. It'll be interesting to watch how this plays out going forward. If the Trojans don't find a way to clean up their play, it could end up costing them a game or two.

Leonard Williams' ejection before halftime also could prove to be a big blow to a team that is already short on the defensive front. As Conquest Chronicle writes, there isn't much of an excuse to throw a punch in a game already over (even if someone supposedly spits on you). Williams' ejection might lead to further ramifications.

USC is back in the top 10 in the AP poll following a 50-6 win over the Colorado Buffalos on Saturday.

The USC Trojans cracked the AP Poll's top 10 following their 50-6 win over the Colorado Buffalos on Saturday for the first time since Week 3.

The Trojans join the Oregon Ducks (No. 2) and the Oregon State Beavers (No. 7) as the third top-10 team from the Pac-12. South Carolina's 44-11 loss to Florida provided the room for the Trojans to crack the top 10.

USC was ranked second in Week 2, but a Week 3 21-14 loss to Stanford saw the Trojans drop out of the top 10 to No. 13. USC has rattled off four straight victories to climb back into the top 10.

The Stanford Cardinal moved up three spots to No. 19 following their 21-3 victory over the Cal Golden Bears to give the Pac-12 four teams ranked in the top 25.

Arizona and UCLA each received seven votes, and Arizona State received five votes to round out the Pac-12 representation.

Alabama wasn't unanimously voted into first place for the first time since Week 5. Oregon remained in second place for the fifth consecutive week, but saw their total points drop just a few from Week 8.

Stars come out in full force to congratulate Robert Woods on his all-time USC receptions mark.

USC Trojans wide receiver Robert Woods' eight receptions in USC's 50-6 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday were good enough to give the junior receiver the all-time mark for career receptions -- an impressive mark that was greeted with praise from around the Los Angeles and USC community.

Former USC receiver Keyshawn Johnson, and Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul and forward Blake Griffin were among the sporting celebrities to wish Woods all the best after breaking the noteworthy record.

Woods, who has a year of eligibility remaining, has now compiled 220 catches during his USC career, eclipsing Dwayne Jarrett's old mark of 217 receptions. Woods' four touchdown catches against the Buffaloes also set a game record for USC receivers.

USC quarterback Matt Barkley also got in on the record-breaking action against Colorado, setting the career mark for touchdown passes for a Trojan, and eclipsing 100 touchdown passes in his time at the helm of the USC offense.
