The Los Angeles Angels were hoping to pick up a series win on Sunday against the Seattle Mariners at the Big A. Unbelievably, the Mariners were able to hand Jered Weaver just his second loss of the season as they defeated the Halos 4-1 in the rubber game.

Jesus Montero led off the second inning with his 11th home run of the year to get Seattle on the board first. The lead didn't last long, as Vernon Wells tied things up in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly to score Howie Kendrick. Somewhat surprisingly, that would be the only run the Angels would score in support of Weaver.

In the top of the six, Montero hit his second home run of the game, this time a two-run shot that put the Mariners on top for good. Chone Figgins hit an RBI triple in the top of the ninth for a big insurance run.

Weaver went seven innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks. With the loss, he falls to 15-2. Albert Pujols and Mike Trout both went hitless in the game.

The Los Angeles Angels got some unexpected contributions from Vernon Wells on Saturday in the second game of a three-game series against the Seattle Mariners at the Big A. Unfortunately, Wells could only do so much in a 7-4 loss.

The Mariners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning with RBI singles from Trayvon Robinson and Dustin Ackley. John Jaso belted a solo homer in the third inning to make it 4-0 Seattle.

Seattle added another three runs in the fourth inning, on a Brendan Ryan sacrifice fly, an error by Albert Pujols and an RBI single from Jaso.

Wells, who was making a rare start in the wake of the exemplary play by Mark Trumbo and Mike Trout this season, finally got the Angels on the board in the fifth inning with an RBI single. He hit his seventh homer of the year in the eighth to cut the Seattle lead to 7-3.

Kendrys Morales managed to get the Angels another run closer in the ninth inning with his 15th home run of the year.

The Angels cannot afford to drop this series, especially with the Oakland Athletics winning their game on Saturday. The Halos will go for the series win on Sunday.

As expected, the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday made official their promotion of relief pitcher Steven Geltz to the major leagues, before their game against the Seattle Mariners in Anaheim. Geltz takes the roster spot of David Carpenter, who was optioned to Triple A Salt Lake after Friday's game.

In 19 games in Triple A, the right-hander was 0-1 with a 3.76 ERA with three saves, nine walks, and 23 strikeouts. Geltz, 24, was promoted earlier this season from Double A Arkansas, where he was 3-0 with a 0.36 ERA in 21 games, with six walks and 37 strikeouts.

In his last six outings in Triple A, Geltz had 13 strikeouts against just one walk in 8 1/3 innings.

The Los Angeles Angels look for their second straight win on Saturday night, hosting the Seattle Mariners in the middle game of a three-game series in Anaheim. Mark Trumbo gets a night off for the Angels on Saturday, with Vernon Wells starting in left field.

Trumbo had started 10 straight games and 80 of the last 81 contests. He has seven home runs in 26 games since the All-Star break, but he is hitting just .238/.300/.455 during that span. Here are the starting lineups for Saturday night:

Following their 6-5 win over the Seattle Mariners on Friday night in Anaheim, the Los Angeles Angels optioned relief pitcher David Carpenter to Triple A Salt Lake per Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com.

The Angels' bullpen has struggled mightily with a 6.41 ERA in 27 games since the All-Star break, including taking five losses in their recently completed 10-game road trip. Carpenter, 25, is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 28 games this season, but he allowed six runs and seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings in his three August appearances.

The corresponding roster move will become official on Saturday, but LAAngelsInsider.com reported that right-hander Steven Geltz will be recalled from Triple A. Geltz put up a 3.76 ERA with 23 strikeouts and nine walks in 26 2/3 innings in Salt Lake, and earlier this season he had a 0.36 ERA with 37 strikeouts and six walks with Double A Arkansas before moving up one level.

The Los Angeles Angels managed to pick up a big win on Friday night against the Seattle Mariners. They were able to eliminate a 5-0 deficit and wind up with a 6-5 walk-off win against Felix Hernandez thanks to -- who else? -- Mike Trout.

The Mariners jumped out to a big early lead after scoring five runs in the third inning. All five runs came on two Seattle home runs; a two-run shot from Dustin Ackley and a three-run shot from John Jaso.

Mike Trout got the Angels right back in the game in the bottom of the third, blasting a three-run homer to left-center field to cut the lead to 5-3. It was Trout's 21st homer of the season. In the fifth, Trout tied things up with a two-run sacrifice fly.

The Angels loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth and scored the walk-off win when Seattle reliever Josh Kinney threw a wild pitch that allowed Peter Bourjos to score.

Trout was only 1-for-3 in the game but would up with a whopping five RBI. Without Trout, the Angels would have had no chance in this one.

The Angels are trying to get back in the win column. A series against the Mariners at home seems like a good place to start.

The Los Angeles Angels would rather forget about their recent trip to Oakland, which ended with them losing a three-game series and ceding second place in the American League West to the Athletics. They will get a chance to regroup as they return to the Big A and look to take some of their frustrations out on the Seattle Mariners.

The Mariners have just lost back-to-back series, losing two of three to the New York Yankees and being swept by the Baltimore Orioles.

TV Schedule & Probable Pitchers

Friday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m. PT and will be televised on FOX Sports West. You can catch the radio broadcast on KLAA 830. The Angels receive their least favorable pitching matchup in the opener, as ace Felix Hernandez will go for his 11th win against the 5-10 Ervin Santana, who will enter the game with a 5.83 ERA.

Saturday's game will begin at 6:05 p.m. PT and will be televised on FOX Sports West. You can catch the radio broadcast on KLAA 830. Hisashi Iwakuma and Dan Haren will both be trying to get back on the right tack as they face off. Iwakuma is 2-3 with a 4.20 ERA, while Haren is 8-8 with a 4.44 ERA.

Sunday's finale will begin at 12:35 p.m. PT and will be televised on FOX Sports West. You can catch the radio broadcast on KLAA 830. The Halos will try to close things out strong as Jered Weaver takes the hill and goes for his 16th win. He'll take on the Mariners' most consistent pitcher Jason Vargas, who is 12-8 with a 3.69 ERA.
