The Los Angeles Angels got more than they bargained for in their three-game series against the Oakland Athletics at the O.co Coliseum. On Wednesday, the Angels had some bullpen issues yet again as they blew a lead and were not able to battle all the way back in a 9-8 loss. With the series loss, the Angels are now a game and a half behind the A's for second place in the American League West.

Kendrys Morales lofted a home run to right field in the top of the second, but the 1-0 lead only lasted until the bottom of the inning. The A's answered back with a two-run George Kottaras homer off of starter Zack Greinke. RBI singles from Brandon Moss and Josh Reddick quickly made it 4-1 Oakland.

Chris Iannetta cut the Oakland lead by a run when he led off the third with a homer. In the fifth inning, home runs from Torii Hunter and Morales gave the Angels a 5-4 lead.

Greinke turned the ball over to the bullpen in the bottom of the sixth and LaTroy Hawkins promptly gave up five runs on a Coco Crisp double, Yoenis Cespedes two-run single and a mammoth two-run homer from Chris Carter that put the A's back on top, 9-5.

Mark Trumbo snapped his dry spell with his 29th home run in the seventh. The Angels looked like they had a rally in the eighth inning after two infield singles to lead off the frame, but Sean Doolittle struck out Iannetta, Mike Trout and Hunter in succession.

The Halos were able to get two more runs in the top of the ninth with a two-out, two-run single from Howie Kendrick, but Erick Aybar grounded out to end the game.

The Angels will return home and hope to get right against the Seattle Mariners starting on Friday. They'll have a much-needed off day on Thursday to lick their wounds and think about how to remedy their latest skid.

The Oakland Athletics hit four home runs Tuesday night, outlasting the Los Angeles Angels 10-4 in the second game of their three-game series. With the loss, the Halos (59-52) fell a half-game behind Oakland (59-51) for second place in the American League West.

Mike Trout went 1-for-5 on the night with three strikeouts, but his one hit was a home run, his 20th on the season. Trout, who also leads the major leagues with 36 stolen bases, is just the third Angels player ever with 20 home runs and 30 steals in one season. The rookie joins Bobby Bonds (37 home runs, 41 stolen bases in 1977) and Devon White (24 home runs, 32 steals in 1987) in exclusive company.

Jonny Gomes opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning against Angels starter C.J. Wilson. The A's then rallied for four runs against Wilson in the third inning, highlighted by a fielding error by third baseman Alberto Callaspo.

Wilson allowed six runs (three earned runs) in five innings to take the loss (9-8), and also allowed nine hits and five walks, while striking out four.

Derek Norris and Adam Rosales hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning against David Carpenter to give Oakland a 9-0 lead.

Bartolo Colon (9-8) allowed one unearned run for Oakland in seven innings to earn the win. He walked none and struck out five.

Erick Aybar went 2-for-4 for the Halos, including his fifth home run of the season. Zack Greinke gets the call for the Angels on Wednesday afternoon in the series finale, facing Dan Straily for Oakland.

Jered Weaver twirled yet another gem on Monday night against the Oakland Athletics. The Angels won by a final score of 4-0 to reclaim second place in the American Legue West.

The Angels struck first, getting two runs off of Oakland starter Jarrod Parker in the top of the second inning on RBI singles from Erick Aybar and Mike Trout.

They added two more runs on a single from Torii Hunter in the seventh inning, which was more than enough run support for Weaver.

The Angels were burned by a call in the fifth inning, as Mike Trout was called out at second base trying to stretch a leadoff single into a double, even though he was visibly safe by some measure.

Weaver struck out nine in the complete-game shutout to improve to 15-1 with a 2.13 ERA. He allowed just four hits and walked none.

The Los Angeles Angels played Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox under protest. On Monday, the official ruling of Joe Torre and Major League Baseball was that the protest would be denied.

In the first inning of Friday's game, the White Sox had the bases loaded with no outs. Paul Konerko grounded to third base and Alberto Callaspo fielded the ball and threw home to Chris Iannetta, who then threw on to first base to attempt to complete the double play. The throw pulled Albert Pujols off the bag and Konerko was called safe at first.

Mike Scioscia immediately came out to argue the call, insisting that Konerko was illegally in the path of Iannetta's throw and thus should have been called out. The umpires disagreed and the Angels played the remainder of the game under protest.

Teams play games under protest a handful of times each year and very nearly every time, those protests are denied. The ruling is not surprising.

The Oakland A's are hosting the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game series. Second place in the American League West is at stake.

The Oakland Athletics have been surprising a lot of people. As the Los Angeles Angels head to the O.co Coliseum to begin a three-game series on Monday, the A's hold a half-game lead over the Halos for second place in the American League West. The Angels will hope to switch places with the A's in the division by the time they leave Oakland.

The Coliseum has held a special kind of magic for the A's over the course of the season. Oakland leads the Majors in walk-off wins, with 13 in all. With the Angels having bullpen troubles all season, that number may make Angels fans cringe. It will be up to the Angels lineup to put some big numbers up on the board and give the middle relief plenty of cushion.

TV Schedule, Probable Pitchers & More

Monday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m. PT and will be televised on FOX Sports West. You can catch the radio broadcast on KLAA 830. In the most favorable pitching matchup of the series, the Angels will send their ace Jered Weaver to the mound, looking for his 15th win. On the A's side, Jarrod Parker is coming off a quality start and trying to get his eighth win of the year.

Tuesday's first pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. PT and the game will be televised on FOX Sports West. You can catch the radio broadcast on KLAA 830. C.J. Wilson is still in search of his 10th win and has been knocked around as of late. His opponent will be Bartolo Colon, who threw eight shutout innings against the Blue Jays in his last start.

Wednesday's finale will begin at 12:35 p.m. PT and will be televised on FOX Sports West. You can catch the radio broadcast on KLAA 830. New arrival Zack Greinke is still looking for his first win for the Angels since coming over in a trade from the Brewers. The A's will send new call-up Dan Straily to the mound, who was impressive in his Major League debut.
