The Los Angeles Angels scored early and often on Wednesday afternoon, beating the Kansas City Royals 11-6 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Torii Hunter led the way with four hits, three runs, and three RBI, including his 11th home run of the season in the win.

Mike Trout, as per usual, contributed to the offense as well, hitting his 16th home run and his 20th double, on his way to scoring three runs and driving in two of his own. All the offense came in support of Jered Weaver, who improved to 13-1 on the season by allowing just two runs in five innings in the series finale.

Luke Hochevar allowed eight runs on nine hits in three innings to suffer the loss for Kansas City.

The win gave the Angels six straight series wins at home, where they are 13-5 in their last 18 contests.

The Angels have Thursday off, but conclude their homestand with a three-game weekend series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Dan Haren will start the series opener on Friday, against Alex Cobb for Tampa Bay.

As the Anaheim Angels look to keep pace with the streaking Oakland Athletics and first-place Texas Rangers, a pair of their important pieces are dealing with some injuries in Albert Pujols and Erick Aybar.

According to CBS Sports' Danny Knobler, X-rays on Pujols' elbow were negative after he swung at an inside pitch in the third inning against the Kansas City Royals last night and was struck on the right elbow. After last night's game skipper Mike Scoscia wasn't too worried about it:

"He's a tough guy. He plays nicked up - and plays very well nicked up."

As for Aybar, the team is calling his injury "a subtle nondisplaced fractured right big toe" and is considered day-to-day.

Center fielder Torri Hunter also got banged up after attempting a diving catch in the sixth inning on the warning track and missing. Hunter would end up bruising a few of his ribs and get pulled form the game.

The Los Angeles Angels are considering a deal to improve their starting rotation before the July 31 trade deadline. The club has been linked to various pitchers, seemingly everyone from Zack Greinke to James Shields. They were once also linked to Cole Hamels of the Phillies, but he appears likely to stay in Philadelphia with a new contract extension in the works.

Shields, 30, is a very talented pitcher and has held his own against the offensive juggernauts in the American League East. As the Tampa Bay Rays try and decide whether or not they'll be sellers in the next week, Shields will be a popular name on the rumor mill.

Here is Tim Kurkjian of ESPN with the latest.

The Los Angeles Angels and the Tampa Bay Rays are heavily involved in significant trade talks, but earlier discussions involving pitcher James Shields fizzled out, a source said Tuesday.

The Angels continue to look for pitching help before next week's trade deadline, while the Rays continue to search for starting catching help, the source said.

A potential deal is complicated, the source said, because money is involved and there is a chance that Angels pitcher Ervin Santana could also be included.

While the updated story from Kurkjian suggests the talks for Shields are dead, other sources in the industry believe talks will remain fluid throughout the week. Just about every club in baseball is in the midst of evaluating their current assets (and what they may fetch through a trade) and the Rays are never afraid to acquire a couple of young players for proven talent.

Stay tuned for continued updates throughout the week. The Angels are expected to be busy.

The Los Angeles Angels are suffering from uneven play as of late. When they're hitting, they look unstoppable. When they're unable to score runs in bunches -- like in Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals -- they don't look very impressive at all.

Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer off of Garrett Richards in the first inning to stake the Royals to an early lead. Mark Trumbo hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half, but RBIs from Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar in the top of the second put the game out of reach for good.

Royals starter Will Smith held the Angels to just two hits and four walks in seven innings of work and the Angels only recorded four hits in the game, none of them for extra bases.

The Angels are now tied with the Oakland Athletics (who have now won six in a row) for second place in the American League West. They need a series win on getaway day Wednesday.

The Los Angeles Angels look for their third straight win on Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals, and they will have Jean Segura making his major league debut starting at shortstop. Segura was called up on Sunday after Erick Aybar fouled a ball off his toe on Saturday.

Segura, rated the Angels' second best prospect by Baseball America before the season, batting .294 with 50 runs scored in 94 games with Double A Arkansas this season, with 10 doubles, five triples, and seven home runs. He went 2-for-3 in the 2012 Futures Game in Kansas City, starting at second base for the World Team.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Angels announced a trade. While far from a blockbuster deal prior to the trade deadline, this could still be a beneficial transaction for the future of the Angels franchise. General manager Jerry Dipoto announced that the Angels had traded for Barry Enright from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

From the press release:

Enright, 26, has spent the 2012 campaign with the triple-A Reno Aces of the Pacific Coast League. In 21 starts, he is 8-6 with one complete game and a 5.87 ERA (110.1 IP - 72 ER). In 2011, the 6'3" 220-pound Enright appeared with the Aces as well as with the Diamondbacks. He made seven starts with Arizona (1-4, 7.41 ERA) and appeared in 21 games (21 starts) with Reno (9-5, 5.21 ERA).

The Angels might be viewing Enright as an insurance arm in case Ervin Santana or Jerome Williams are unable to get back on the right track. Never a bad idea to have another starter in the mix.

Enright will be assigned to Triple-A Salt Lake.

The Los Angeles Angels kicked off a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals at Angel Stadium on Monday night and ended up making another strong statement about their legitimacy in the American League West. The Angels were unable to help starter C.J. Wilson pick up his 10th win, but they were able to break a late tie and win by the final score of 6-3.

The Royals struck first, putting up a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single from Alex Gordon and a sacrifice fly from Lorenzo Cain. The Angels answered right back in the bottom of the inning, tying things up with an RBI groundout from Albert Pujols and an RBI double from Howie Kendrick.

Maicer Izturis hit an RBI single to put the Angels on top 3-2 in the sixth, but the Royals knotted it up once again in the top of the seventh, thanks to an RBI single from Brayan Pena.

The breakthrough hit for the Halos came in the bottom of the eighth. The Angels loaded the bases with two outs and pinch hitter Kendrys Morales came up to bat. He came through and then some, hitting a bases-clearing single off the base of the wall and putting the Angels on top for good to open the series with a win.

Mike Trout had another multi-hit night, going 2-for-5 with a pair of singles, but had no RBI, runs scored or stolen bases.
