On Sunday, the 2012 U.S. Open finally came to an end. The difficult course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco provided no end of frustration for many of the world's best golfers, but those headaches were likely mitigated by the hefty payouts that many golfers received.

The biggest check, of course, went to Webb Simpson for winning his first career Grand Slam. Simpson will pocket $1.44 million for the win and the top 15 places in the tournament will all earn six figures. Even the last-place player will take home $16,500 for the tournament. Amateurs, including the breakout star Beau Hossler, will take home no money for playing in the event.

Here are the payouts for the final Top 10 standings in the 2012 U.S. Open:

1 Webb Simpson (+1): $1,440,000
T2 Michael Thompson (+2): $695,916
T2 Graeme McDowell (+2): $695,916
T4 Jason Dufner (+3): $276,841
T4 Padraig Harrington (+3): $276,841
T4 David Toms (+3): $276,841
T4 John Peterson (+3): $276,841
T4 Jim Furyk (+3): $276,841
9 Ernie Els (+4): $200,280
T10 John Senden (+5): $163,594
T10 Kevin Chappell (+5): $163,594
T10 Casey Wittenberg (+5): $163,594
T10 Retief Goosen (+5): $163,594
T10 Lee Westwood (+5): $163,594

On Sunday, Webb Simpson captured his first career Grand Slam title as he came from behind and reaped the benefit of a pair of collapses in order to win the 2012 U.S. Open.

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell entered the final round as the co-leaders at 1-under, but the course eventually ate them up, as it ate up almost every golfer over the course of the four-day tournament. While McDowell had a string of bogeys early, Furyk stayed in command and at even par for most of the day to retain his lead. Unfortunately, Furyk's inability to land a single birdie was his undoing. Furyk bogeying two of his final three holes secured the collapse.

Simpson, meanwhile, had a pair of early bogeys but managed to shoot 2-under on the day with a quartet of birdies after the rough front six to finish at 1-over in the tournament. As it turns out, that ended up being enough to take the title.

Tiger Woods entered the day with a fighting chance to take his fourth career U.S. Open title, but went 4-over on his first three holes to officially take himself out of contention.

Webb Simpson won the 2012 U.S. Open after spending a comfortable amount of time in the clubhouse. Simpson came in a few strokes behind going into the final round and looked like he was in deep trouble after bogeying twice early on. But then Simpson birdied three straight holes from the sixth through the eighth holes, then made the crucial birdie on the tenth hole that ended up being the ultimate difference as Jim Furyk stumbled down the stretch and blew the lead.

Tiger Woods had himself a solid Thursday and Friday, but then struggled through the entire weekend and had a +3 on Sunday to fall well behind.

Webb Simpson now has the lead in the clubhouse in the 2012 U.S. Open. Can he hold onto it?

Simpson started off his round tough. He was +3 going into Sunday's round, then bogeyed the 2nd and 5th holes to go to +5. Simpson then had three straight birdies on the 6th, 7th, and 8th holes. he then added a birdie on the tenth hole. to move up to +1, and that's where he closed after par-ing out the rest of the golf course.

Jim Furyk had the lead for most of the tournament, but made two crucial bogeys on the 13th and the 16th holes to fall one off the lead going into the 18th. Graeme McDowell also had a birdie on the 17th to move within one of the lead going into the final hole.

The U.S. Open amateurs are all done with their final rounds, and Beau Hossler missed out on a golden opportunity to be the top amateur of the round. The future Texas Longhorn straight out of Mission Viejo, California seemed to have a stranglehold on being the best amateur overall when he started the day with an overall score of +3. But Hossler struggled when he actually made it to the course, compiling seven bogeys, three birdies and a double bogey on the 18th to sag off the lead and conceding that honor to current Texas Longhorn Jordan Spieth.

Round 4 of the 2012 U.S. Open is underway, and Jim Furyk has taken sole control of the lead. Graeme McDowell, who opened the day tied with Furyk, picked up a bogey on holes three and five to move him to 1-over and in second place. He's joined there by Ernie Els, who picked up a beautiful eagle on hole seven to tie for second.

Tiger Woods had an opportunity as the day opened to advance on the leaders, but that opportunity has been lost. He would have needed to play incredibly well to recover from the 75 he shot on Saturday, and he was unable to do so. He picked up four bogeys and a double bogey in the first six, and though he's settled since then at 5-over for the day and 9-over for the tournament he appears to be out of the running.

Long Beach's Patrick Cantlay, the UCLA Bruin amateur, shot a 72 on the day and finished the tournament at 11-over, leaving him in 41st place. 17 year old Beau Hossler has had a better day, only 2-over through 10.

Round 4 of the 2012 U.S. Open is underway, and the leaders are just beginning to tee off. Tiger Woods is struggling early. Long Beach Native and UCLA Bruin Patrick Cantlay has had mixed results through his last round, picking three birdies and a gorgeous eagle throgh 14, but also collecting five bogeys. The eagle came on hole seven on a long drive that caught the bank behind the hole and rolled into place for a clean two on the par four.

Tiger needed to play his absolute best if he wanted to take a run at the lead, and judging by his first three holes it's not going to be his day. He picked up two bogeys on holes one and two and a double bogey on three. On the fourth hole he had a clear shot at a birdie but had a put come up short, forcing him to settle for par. Beau Hossler, the 17 year old who has stunned everyone by hanging in the top ten, has just started out and managed par on the opening hole.

The other leaders are starting to tee off, finishing with Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell at 3:10pm PDT.

Tiger Woods was the betting favorite heading into the 2012 U.S. Open and had hopes of capturing a record-tying fourth career title at the prestigious Grand Slam event. Woods enters the final day of play on Sunday five strokes off the lead and no longer the betting favorite to win, but still has an outside chance of pulling off the victory.

While the classic Woods runs of years past may not be common (or even likely) any more, it is more likely that the current leaders could all have disastrous final rounds on the nightmare of a course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, that has been causing the world's best golfers fits.

Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell enter the final round at 1-under and sit tied atop the leaderboard.
