The Los Angeles Kings completed their magical run through the playoffs on Monday night with a 6-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Staples Center, to win the Stanley Cup Final, four games to two. It is the first championship in the 45-year history of the Kings. The Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the MVP of the playoffs, went to Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.

Quick was one of the very best goaltenders in the regular season, with a league-high 10 shutouts, a 1.95 goals against average, and a .929 save percentage. But in the postseason he was even better, with three shutouts and a .946 save percentage. He saved 17 of 18 shots in Game 6, and was 16-4 during the postseason. Here is Quick celebrating as the third period ended, hugging teammates Colin Fraser and Drew Doughty:

After receiving the Stanley Cup, Quick was adorned with chants of "M-V-P" from the Staples Center crowd.

Kings Vs. Devils, Stanley Cup Finals 2012 Game 6: Los Angeles Wins Stanley Cup With 6-1 Victory

The Los Angeles Kings are the 2012 NHL Champions, beating the New Jersey Devils 6-1 in a dominant performance to give the franchise their first ever Stanley Cup. They scored three goals in the first period, and the Devils were never able to recover.

Those first three goals came when New Jersey's Steve Bernier smashed into Rob Scuderi and left him bleeding on the ice, picking up a five minute game misconduct penalty. The Kings took full advantage, with Dustin Brown scoring twice and Trevor Lewis adding a third. The Devils spent the entire period on their heels, getting only four shots off on Jonathan Quick.

The second period opened with an early goal by Jeff Carter after a mixup with a lineman hampered New Jersey's defense. The Devils were able to get on the board late in the period, and the teams headed to the locker rooms after the second with the score 4-1.

The third period was tightly contested for the first 15 minutes, but with less than five minutes remaining the Kings put the game even farther out of reach. Down 4-1, the Devils took the huge risk of pulling Martin Brodeur early. The move failed to pay off as the Kings scored, making the game 5-1. Brodeur returned to the net, but that didn't help much as the Kings scored 15 seconds later, leaving the score at 6-1 and securing the Stanley Cup for the Los Angeles Kings.

The Kings were 16-4 through the playoffs, and took out the top three seeds in the Western Conference. Jonathan Quick was the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy, with his stellar goaltending earning him the series MVP award.

Kings Vs. Devils, Stanley Cup Finals 2012 Game 6: Kings Lead 4-1 After 2nd Period

The Los Angeles Kings lead the New Jersey Devils by a score of 4-1 after 40 minutes and are one period away from winning the Stanley Cup. The second period wasn't quite the frenzy of goals that the first was, but Jeff Carter managed to make the most of a slip-up by an official 90 seconds into the period. The linesman drifted away from the boards to avoid interfering with a player entering the game, but that unfortunately put him directly in the path of New Jersey's Anton Volchenkov. Carter went behind the official and a second later the Kings were up 4-0.

Jonathan Quick hasn't had to block too many shots, with the Devils getting only 10 shots through two periods. He did see some action though, as Ryan Carter took out his frustration after Quick made a stop:

via assets.sbnation.com

The Devils were getting more chances in the second half of the second period than they had in previous minutes. Adam Henrique made the most of one of them, poking one past Quick to put the Devils on the board. Dustin Penner picked up a late penalty for roughing, but with only 17 seconds left in the period the Devils were unable to capitalize. That left Henrique's goal as the only one they picked up, and the Kings are up by three goals and 20 minutes away from the Stanley Cup.

Kings Vs. Devils, Stanley Cup Finals 2012 Game 6: Dustin Brown Scores Twice, Steve Bernier Penalty Looms Large, L.A. Leads 3-0

The third time just might be the charm for the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings are now 40 minutes away from their first Stanley Cup after cashing in three goals on a single game misconduct penalty on Steve Bernier and subsequent five-minute power play, and lead the New Jersey Devils 3-0 after the first period of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

The Kings lead the best-of-seven series three games to two, though they have lost the last two games.

The penalty on Bernier occured at 10:10 of the first period on a vicious hit on Rob Scuderi into the boards that left him laying on the ice bleeding.

The Kings capitalized in a huge way. Dustin Brown scored at 11:03 of the first, then added another goal just 102 seconds later. Trevor Lewis added a goal at 15:03, giving the Kings three power play goals and sent the Staples Center crowd into a frenzy.

The Los Angeles Kings were hoping to pick up their first-ever Stanley Cup on Saturday, but the New Jersey Devils caught a couple of very lucky breaks and handed the Kings their first road loss of the 2012 postseason. Now the two teams will return to the Staples Center on Monday for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The Kings are still ahead 3-2 in the best-of-seven series and will have a second chance to clinch their first NHL title on home ice, which would obviously delight the rambunctious crowd at the Staples Center to no end. Game 5 seemed to require everything the Devils had in order to pull off the victory, so the series is not getting out of hand just yet. Should the win not come on Monday night, however, there may be a sudden influx of panic in southern California.

The puck will drop on Monday at 5:00 p.m. PT and will be televised nationally on NBC. You can catch the radio broadcast on 1150 AM.

For more news and notes on the Kings or the NHL Stanley Cup Final, be sure to check out Jewels From The Crown.

2012 Stanley Cup Finals, Devils Vs. Kings: New Jersey Fans Remain Pragmatic After Game 5 Victory

The Los Angeles Kings were in enemy territory on Saturday night attempting to clinch the first Stanley Cup in franchise history. Unfortunately, things did not go as planned in Game 5, as the New Jersey Devils won their second straight game and the Kings lost their first road game of the playoffs. The Kings now hold a 3-2 lead in the series.

Jon Fischer at In Lou We Trust has the Devils fan's perspective on the big win:

New Jersey struggled to get into the Kings' end and get set up on offense. Sometimes, they had to go for a dump-and-change. Sometimes, they had problems moving the puck through the neutral zone. Sometimes, a bad decision was made. To be fair, the Kings were very well organized on defense, which gave the Devils problems. However, five games in and you'd think the skaters would know how to go against them. Tonight, only one line seemed to get it: the Travis Zajac line, with six shots at evens. And even they had some problems. that aside, if the offense struggles to consistently attack, then the other team is going to take advantage. The Kings did exactly that for most of all three periods, especially the third period where they out-shot the Devils 9-3. To be blunt, the Devils stole this victory.

The Kings will have one more chance to clinch their championship on home ice, which Los Angeles fans would certainly appreciate. However, if the Kings should drop another game ... things will get uncomfortably anxious for Southern California hockey fans.

For more news and notes on the Kings or the NHL Stanley Cup Final, be sure to check out Jewels From The Crown.

On the first NJ goal, Jonathan Quick gave away the puck in front of the net while chasing down a lose puck, and on the second there was a tip in off the back of a Kings defender. The close game came down to the last few possessions, but the Kings just couldn't find a way to win for the second straight elimination game.

On the first goal, Quick left the net to retrieve a puck that was sitting back by the boards. His pass was lazy, and the giveaway led to Zach Parise stuffing in it as Quick scrambled to get back in the net.

The Kings were able to tie it up in the second period with a wrist shot from Williams. However, the Devils were able to retake the lead four minutes later with a Bryce Salvador slap shot that bounced off a Kings defender and into the net.

The Kings had a goal disallowed, when Jarret Stoll got one past Martin Brodeur on a Carter rebound, but his stick was too high.

Game six will be Monday at the Staples Center.
