Scott Van Slyke hit his first major league home run, a three-run in the bottom of the seventh inning off Marc Rzepczynski, to help the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium. The home run, the first of Van Slyke's major league career, turned a 5-3 deficit into a one-run lead.

The Dodgers pounded out 11 hits off Kyle Lohse, but were able to only score three runs off the St. Louis starter. He had a lead thanks to the Cardinals scoring five off Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley, three of which were earned, in six innings.

Elian Herrera and Bobby Abreu each had three hits for the Dodgers, and scored on Van Slyke's home run. Javy Guerra pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his second win of the year.

The Dodgers finished off their sweep of St. Louis and have the best record in baseball at 28-13, including 19-4 at home.

The Dodgers open a three-game series in Phoenix on Monday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chris Capuano (5-1, 2.34 ERA) starts the opener for the Dodgers, against Patrick Corbin (2-2, 5.73 ERA) for Arizona.

To say Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Dee Gordon has been struggling would be quite an understatement. The leadoff man is in the midst of a 2-for-31 slump, and is hitting just .200/.239/.255 on the season. Manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday that he would sit Gordon "for a few days" and use him off the bench.

Mattingly wasn't specific on the length of time Gordon will be benched, but noted that the Dodgers face two left-handed pitchers (Patrick Corbin and Joe Saunders) in Arizona on Monday and Wednesday, so it is conceivable Gordon could be a bench player for the next five days, or at least four of those five days.

"Nothing has really changed in my thinking about Dee about what he's going to become or where he will end up," Mattingly said. "Just thinking properly is what Dee needs to do right now. He's not going through anything that there haven't been a ton of guys go through."

Other shortstop options currently on the roster for the Dodgers are Justin Sellers and Elian Herrera. Versatile reserve Jerry Hairston Jr., currently on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, is tentatively scheduled to be activated on Wednesday when the Dodgers are in Arizona.

The Los Angeles Dodgers may have the best record in baseball, at 26-13, but they continue to suffer losses of the medical kind. Second baseman Mark Ellis was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left leg injury, suffered while on the receiving end of a takeout slide by Tyler Greene of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Manager Don Mattingly said the club was still analyzing the MRI results for Ellis, and that the exam showed swelling in multiple places in his leg. "We're still getting information back, but we have enough to know we're going to DL him," Mattingly said.

Ellis was off to a very good start for the Dodgers, hitting .273/.373/.364 with 27 runs scored in 37 games. With Ellis out, the Dodgers will likely use a combination of Adam Kennedy, Elian Herrera, Justin Sellers, and Ivan De Jesus, who was recalled from Triple A Albuquerque on Saturday.

"I think he's a great player. The more you see him play, the better he is," Mattingly said. "He's a tough guy to replace."

Ellis is the fourth Dodgers starter currently on the disabled list, along with Matt Kemp, Juan Uribe, and Juan Rivera. Super sub Jerry Hairston Jr., who has started 15 games for the Dodgers, is also on the disabled list with a left hamstring injury, but is expected to return Wednesday when the Dodgers are in Phoenix to battle the Arizona Diamondbacks. Hairston will likely take part in two minor league games Monday and Tuesday on a rehab assignment.

The Los Angeles Dodgers look for their third straight win on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium, hosting the St. Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers will do so without their leadoff man, as Dee Gordon is not in the starting lineup.

This is the seventh time in 40 games Gordon has not started, and the third time in the last seven contests he has been sat. Gordon went 0-for-5 Friday night and is in a 2-for-31 slump. "Tonight was not very good. This game seems to be moving awful fast for him right now," Mattingly said on Friday night.

Tony Gwynn Jr., playing center for the injured Matt Kemp, bats leadoff tonight, with Justin Sellers at shortstop. Here are Saturday's starting lineups:

A.J. Ellis drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opening game of their weekend series at Dodger Stadium. The win was the second straight for the Dodgers, who own the best record in baseball (26-13) and are an astonishing 17-4 at home this season.

Ellis was just part of a great night of production from the bottom of the order for the Dodgers. Adam Kennedy, James Loney, Ellis, and Tony Gwynn Jr., who batted fifth through eighth for the Dodgers on Friday, combined for 10 hits, three walks, and drove in all six Dodgers runs on the night.

The Dodgers held a 5-4 lead with two outs in the ninth inning, but Lance Berkman crushed a ball well into the pavilion in right center field to tie the game off Kenley Jansen, who suffered his second blown save of the season. In both of his blown saved, Jansen got the win thanks to a walk-off walk by the Dodgers.

"For us to have comeback twice, it shows our team and our character," Ellis said after the game. "It's just guys having good at-bats throughout the lineup."

Ted Lilly pitched seven strong innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out six. He did allow four unearned runs in the third inning, including a two-run home run by Matt Holliday, who hit his ninth long ball of the season.

Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis left the game after the seventh inning when he was slid into by Tyler Greene at second base. Ellis suffered a lower left leg injury and was sore after the game, but x-rays showed nothing was broken. His status will be updated on Saturday.
