After three weeks of Pac-12 Conference play, there is one thing that is clear, aside from the fact that this is a terrible year for the conference. The Cal Bears and Stanford Cardinal have been the class of the conference so far in the 2011-2012 season, as both Bay Area schools sit atop the Pac-12 basketball standings:

The conference hasn't had a team ranked in the top 25 of either the Associated Press poll or ESPN/USA Today coaches poll in six weeks, and that doesn't figure to change any time soon. Stanford was the only team to receive any votes, finishing 35th in both polls. This week will let us know whether or not the Washington Huskies (4-1, third place in the Pac-12) are for real.

The UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans travel to the Pacific Northwest this week for battles with Oregon and Oregon State. The Oregon Ducks had a big week this last week with a rare sweep in Arizona.

Two college basketball teams took the floor on Sunday night at Galen Center, but there is a large chasm between the two schools. The UCLA Bruins decimated the USC Trojans 66-47 on Sunday night, completely outclassing the Trojans and highlighting the different paths that the two schools have taken.

UCLA opened their season 2-5, with embarrassing home losses to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee State. Reeves Nelson, the team's leading scorer and rebounder from last season, feuded with coach Ben Howland and was eventually dismissed from the team. UCLA has turned the corner, winning eight of their last 10 contests, including each of their last three games. Travis Wear and David Wear have been effective on the inside, while senior guard Lazeric Jones has done everything asked of him while leading the team in points, assists, and steals. The Bruins were picked as one of the favorites to win the Pac-12 Conference, and they are starting to play like it. This week's tests on the road in Oregon will give us a better idea of whether or not UCLA can still contend for a conference title.

USC, meanwhile, has simply gone ice cold. Galen Center has become an offensive wasteland. The Trojans are 1-9 in their last 10 games and have averaged 50.8 points per game during that span, scoring under 50 points in seven of those 10 games. USC has shot under 40% from the field in nine of their last 10 games, and has shot a combined 36.1% during that span, since the beginning of December. The Trojans are 0-5 in the Pac-12 for the first time since 2005, when they ended the year with a 5-13 conference record. Playing the way the Trojans are now, I'm not sure if there are five wins left on their schedule this season.

The UCLA Bruins delivered a beatdown at Galen Center on Sunday night, dominating the USC Trojans 66-47 to win their third straight game. The Trojans continued their free fall, losing their sixth straight game and falling to 0-5 in the Pac-12 Conference.

Travis Wear led the Bruins (10-7, 3-2) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Lazeric Jones added 15 points and five rebounds for UCLA, who shot 51.0% from the field for the game. The Bruins absolutely dominated inside, outscoring the Trojans 30-22 in the paint, and outrebounding USC 44-19. David Wear added 13 points and seven boards for the Bruins.

USC had beaten UCLA in four of their last five meetings, including two straight at Galen Center. But that seems like ancient history now. The Bruins led 37-19 at halftime on Sunday.

USC (5-13, 0-5) shot 36.0% from the field, the ninth time in their last 10 games they have shot under 40%. The Trojans made just two of six three-point attempts, and have made just eight of their last 41 three-point shots (19.5%) over their last four games. Since the beginning of December, USC is 1-9 and has averaged 50.8 points per game during that span.

Maurice Jones led the Trojans with 13 points, but made just four of 13 field goals.

Both UCLA and USC head to the Pacific Northwest next weekend to face Oregon and Oregon State. USC begins with Oregon Thursday, while UCLA opens their weekend in Corvallis against the Beavers.

The Pac-12 Conference is having a down year in basketball, to put it mildly, but it appears the USC Trojans are taking that putridity to new depths. The Trojans are retiring the jersey of former All-American Harold Miner a halftime Sunday, but they may want to see if he can suit up in the second half, as the UCLA Bruins used a 24-6 run to take control at Galen Center with a 37-19 halftime lead over the Trojans.

Maurice Jones hit a three-pointer at the first half buzzer to cut that UCLA lead to 18. USC shot 29.2% (seven for 24) in the first half. UCLA had 20 points in the paint, compared to just 10 for the Trojans, and shot 64% from the field (16 for 25).

The Bruins are simply too big for the Trojans, as their 21-7 rebounding edge showed. Travis Wear had eight points and four rebounds in the first half, while Norman Powell chipped in with five points and five rebounds in just 10 minutes off the bench. Lazeric Jones led UCLA with 11 points and four assists in the opening 20 minutes.

The USC Trojans look for their first Pac-12 Conference victory of the season on Sunday night, when they host their crosstown rivals the UCLA Bruins at Galen Center. The Bruins look for their third straight win. Both teams have been off for a week, and here are the relevant details of Sunday night's game.

Series: The Trojans have won four of their last five meetings with the Bruins, including winning each of the last two years at Galen Center. The two schools split two meetings last season, with each team winning at home. UCLA leads the all-time series 129-104.

Brick City: USC has lost eight of their last nine games since the beginning of December, and during that span have shot 38.2% or worse in eight of those games, with a low of 29.3% from the field last Sunday against Arizona. During that span, USC has shot just 36.1% from the field.

Injury Report: Bruins' center Joshua Smith suffered a concussion on January 4, and missed UCLA's game against Arizona one night later. Smith however did return on January 7 against Arizona State, scoring 18 points in 21 minutes, and is expected to play Sunday night.

Miner scored 2,048 points in three seasons at USC, averaging 23.5 points per game.

The USC Trojans host the UCLA Bruins Sunday night at Galen Center, looking for their first Pac-12 Conference victory of the season. However, the highlight of the night will be when USC retires the No. 23 jersey of Harold Miner, the all-time leading scorer in school history.

Miner scored 2,048 points in his three seasons as a Trojan, averaging a school record 23.5 points per game in his career at USC, including a school-record 19 games of 30 points or more. As a junior in 1992, Miner averaged 26.3 points per game and led USC to a 24-6 record and a No. 8 final AP ranking. Miner captured All-American honors in 1992 and also was named the Pac-10 Player of the Year and the Sports Illustrated Player of the Year.

"I really miss being around the game," Miner told Baxter Holmes of the Los Angeles Times. "I've been away for a long time."

Miner never quite lived up to the hype as "Baby Jordan," lasting just four years in an injury-plagued NBA career with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers. But he will always be remembered fondly at USC, for plays like this:
