Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers looked very sluggish and poor during a recent stretch of the regular season, making a lot of people wonder if the grind of the shortened and abbreviated 66 game grind.

After shooting 12 of 46 from the field in a two game stretch against the Denver Nuggets, Bryant got back to work with an impressive four game stretch, scoring 37, 30, 39, and 26 points while more importantly averaging about 50% from the field. Not to say he could be even more efficient (he's taking too many threes, going four for 19 from downtown). He ended up earning Western Conference Player Of The Week honors for his efforts.

If the Lakers can get performances like this from Bryant in the future, they should be in great shape. Kobe's biggest issue is inefficiency, and this team needs him to play as strongly as possible if they hope to be in contention for great things this season.

The Los Angeles Lakers have opened up this lockout-truncated NBA season with a rather full schedule, as nobody has played more games to date. They have also played at home quite often, as seven of their first 10 games have been in Los Angeles. That trend continues this week, with three of their four games at Staples Center including one "road game" against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Here's a look at the week ahead for the Lakers:

Tuesday - Phoenix Suns (4-4) at Lakers: The Lakers have beaten the Suns three straight times and have won seven of their last 10 home games against Phoenix.

Wednesday - Lakers at Utah Jazz (5-3): Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap have combined to average 30 points and 17 rebounds per game in the early going, and the team has won four straight. The Jazz are 4-0 at home this season.

Friday - Cleveland Cavaliers (4-4) at Lakers: Former Laker Byron Scott brings in his Cleveland team for the sixth game of a seven-game road trip.

Saturday - Lakers at Clippers (4-2): The Clippers have quite a week, as they battle Portland on the road, Miami at home, then end their week with the battle for Los Angeles. The Lakers will look to erase the memory of the two preseason losses in late December.

After this week, the Lakers will have played 10 of their 14 games at Staples Center, where they have won six straight games.

The Los Angeles Lakers have had one of the busiest schedules in the NBA. They played 10 games in the first 15 days of the NBA season, something matched only by the Oklahoma City Thunder. This past week, the Lakers played four games and continued their pattern of the early going: success at home, struggling on the road. The result was a 3-1 week for the Lakers:

Tuesday: Lakers 108, Houston 99
Andrew Bynum scored 21 points and grabbed 22 rebounds for the first 20-20 game of his career, and Kobe Bryant rebounded from a 6-for-28 game to pour in 37 against the Rockets.

Thursday: Portland 107, Lakers 96
The Lakers led at halftime, but it was short-lived. The Trail Blazers pulled away in the second half, sending the Lakers to their 17th loss in their last 21 regular season games at the Rose Garden. Gerald Wallace paced Portland with 31 points in 13-of-19 shooting.

Friday: Lakers 97, Golden State 90
Kobe poured in a season-high 39 points, including 17 in the decisive third quarter when the Lakers took control of the game, turning a four-point halftime deficit into a nine-point lead. Pau Gasol put up a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks.

Sunday: Lakers 90, Memphis 82
The Lakers really should have blown out the Grizzlies, especially since they were without Zach Randolph. However, a season-worst 27 turnovers by the Lakers ensured that Memphis stayed close the entire game. Luckily for the Lakers however, the Grizzlies never got to within four points in the final quarter and the Lakers celebrated their sixth straight win.

Bryant averaged 33.0 points for the week, while Bynum pulled down 16.3 rebounds to go with his 16.5 points per game. Gasol had two double-doubles for the week and averaged 15.8 points and 10.3 rebounds for the week.

The Los Angeles Lakers won their sixth straight home game on Sunday night, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 90-82 at Staples Center. Kobe Bryant led the team with 26 points and nine assists, but this recap will focus on the double-double trio of Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum, and Matt Barnes.

Since Gasol became a Laker in February 2008, there have been seven games in which three Lakers have had double-doubles, including Sunday night, and Gasol has been involved in all but one:

For Barnes, it was his second straight very productive performance. He played a season-high 35 minutes, two days after playing a season-high 30 minutes against Golden State. Barnes hit a couple of three-pointers, had a steal, and even blocked three shots. Much like he helped frustrate Monta Ellis on Friday night, Barnes played a hand in make Rudy Gay work for his points on Sunday. Gay did score 19, but he also took 19 shots in doing so.

Bynum has just continued his excellent start to his season. He has played six games, and has grabbed at least 12 rebounds in each one. He has five double-doubles, and was a single point away from making it six for six. Through six games, Bynum is averaging 18.8 points, 15.7 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks, while shooting 53.6% from the field and a true shooting percentage of 55.1%.

Bynum did make just five of 14 from the field on Sunday, his second straight game struggling to find his shot, as he is at 34.8% (eight for 23) in the last two contests. Still, on the whole Bynum has been very effective in the early going.

Gasol, in beating his brother Marc Gasol for the eighth time in 11 meetings, took only eight shots from the field en route to his 13-point, 15-rebound performance. Gasol on the season has been very efficient this season, making over half of his field goal attempts in every game but one (the opener against Chicago), and on the year is shooting 57.6% with a true shooting percentage of 61.4%, his highest mark since putting up a 61.7% true shooting percentage in the 2008-2009 season.

The game was ugly, the Los Angeles Lakers were at times careless and sloppy with a season-high 27 turnovers, but the end result Sunday night at Staples Center was just what the doctor ordered. The Lakers held on to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies .90-82 on Sunday, winning their sixth straight home game.

The Lakers led by nine after the first quarter, led by 10 at halftime, and led by 10 points heading into the fourth quarter. The Grizzlies were able to cut the lead to as close as four points in the final period, but they never got any closer. The Lakers outrebounded Memphis 53-34 on the night, as Zach Randolph was indeed missed by the Grizzlies.

Kobe Bryant had 26 points and nine assists to lead the Lakers, who also got double-doubles out of all three of their starting front court. Andrew Bynum had 15 points and 15 rebounds, his sixth straight game with at least 12 rebounds this season. Pau Gasol had 13 points on just eight field goal attempts, and 15 rebounds, while Matt Barnes chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds in his second consecutive productive game at small forward.

Bynum and Gasol were the first Lakers teammates to each grab at least 15 rebounds in the same game since February 1, 2011, when Gasol had 16 rebounds and Lamar Odom had 20 in a win over the Houston Rockets.

Gasol got the best of his brother Marc Gasol, winning for the eighth time in 11 career matchups. Marc had 11 rebounds and seven assists on the night but scored just two points as he missed all nine field goal attempts.

The Lakers next host the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night at Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant scored 15 points and had six assists, leading the hot-shooting Los Angeles Lakers to a 56-46 halftime lead over the Memphis Grizzlies Sunday night at Staples Center. The Lakers used a 9-2 run to close the first quarter and build their lead. The Lakers might have had an even bigger advantage at the break were it not for 11 turnovers.

In the battle of brothers, Pau Gasol had the edge in the first half with eight points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, while Marc Gasol had two points and five rebounds for Memphis and was 0-for-5 from the field. Pau also had four assists, including a nifty behind the back feed to Andrew Bynum for a layup that prompted Stu Lantz to say on the Lakers' broadcast, "There is a point guard in Pau's body, just itching to get out."

The Lakers shot 56.1% (23 for 41) in the first half, fueled in large part by a strong effort from the reserves. Troy Murphy and Steve Blake combined for 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. The Lakers' bench made seven of 11 field goals (63.6%) in the opening 24 minutes.

The Lakers, who shot 16.9% (14 for 83) from three-point range in their last five games, made four of 10 shots from beyond the arc in the first half Sunday.

Marreese Speights scored 12 points off the bench to lead Memphis, while Mike Conley and Rudy Gay each scored 11 points for the Grizzlies.

Memphis will be without big man Zach Randolph, who is out up to eight weeks with a torn MCL. Here are the relevant details of Sunday night's game:

Records: Lakers (5-4), Grizzlies (3-4)

Location: Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles

Time: 6:30 p.m.

TV: Fox Sports West, with Bill Macdonald and Stu Lantz on the call

Offensive Efficiency: Lakers, 104.2 points per 100 possessions (14th in NBA); Grizzlies 98.5 (25th)

Defensive Efficiency: Lakers, 100.4 (10th); Grizzlies 102.1 (15th)

Leading Rebounders: Andrew Bynum, Lakers (15.8 rebounds per game, second in NBA); Marc Gasol, Grizzlies (10.3 rpg, seventh in NBA)

Dirty Dozen: Andrew Bynum has averaged 15.8 rebounds per game in the early going, and has had at least 12 boards in all five of his games so far this season. It is the second longest streak of 12-rebound games in his career, behind only a streak of eight straight games last March.

Battle of Brothers: Pau Gasol, coming off a 17-point, 11-rebound effort against Golden State on Friday for his third double-double of the season, will welcome his younger brother Marc Gasol to town on Sunday night.
Pau Gasol and Marc Gasol, the brothers once traded for each other, will do battle for the 11th time on Sunday night as the Los Angeles Lakers host the Memphis Grizzlies at Staples Center. Pau is four and a half years older than Marc, but by no means is Marc his little brother. Pau is listed at 7'0", 250 pounds, while brother Marc is 7'1", 265 pounds.

The two brothers got together for dinner on Saturday night, and hopefully they got all their conversations out of the way. Because they don't converse much when they play one another. "We don’t really talk about it," Pau told Dave McMenamin of ESPN LA. "We don’t talk about the game. We don’t talk during the game much. We’re just focused on trying to compete and trying to go at each other if we have the opportunity when we do."

It's not always fair to compare the two Gasol brothers to one another, since they don't always guard one another. Marc plays center for Memphis and figures to see an awful lot of Andrew Bynum on both ends of the floor. But here are their 10 matchups against one another, dating back to 2008.
