Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Dustin Brown scored the winner in the shootout as the Los Angeles Kings gave new coach Darryl Sutter a 3-2 win over Anaheim in his debut. With the final shot for Los Angeles, Brown buried a heavy wrister to the glove side of Jonas Hiller. Kyle Palmieri's wrister was then stopped by Jonathan Quick for the win.

"I've simplified things in the shootout," said Brown. "I don't care how we do it, it's all about getting points."

Sutter was officially named head coach of the Kings on Tuesday. He has guided an NHL team to the playoffs in 10 of 11 seasons as a head coach and took over for Terry Murray, who was fired December 12 following a 13-12-4 start. John Stevens coached the Kings on an interim basis for the last four games (2-2-0).

"I thought we moved the puck pretty good and our penalty kill was excellent," said Sutter. "There are things we have to work on here, but it will get better and this was a nice start."

Mike Richards and Brown each had a goal for the Kings, who have won two straight. Quick turned aside 20 shots in the win.

Niklas Hagman and Lubomir Visnovsky each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who have dropped their past four games. Hiller made 32 stops.

"We played solid tonight, but it was the little things that cost us," said Hiller. "I've got to do a better job in the shootout. Those extra points can make the difference in making the playoffs."

The first 20 minutes passed scoreless, but the Ducks got on top at the 13:55 mark of the second as Visnovsky's slap shot from the high slot was tipped in by Hagman.

The Kings, though, got it back 2:22 later as a slap shot from Drew Doughty at the left point was redirected into the net by Richards.

At the 8:02 mark of the third, the Kings took the lead as Anze Kopitar flew into the zone and left a drop pass for Brown, who wristed it home.

However, the Ducks tied the game with 3:11 to play when Visnovsky's blast from the top of the right circle went through a screen provided by Corey Perry.

Game Notes

The Kings have not scored more than two goals in regulation and overtime since November 22 against St. Louis, a span of 13 games during which they have gone 5-7-1...The Kings play in San Jose on Friday...Anaheim plays in San Jose on Monday...The Kings have taken three of four from the Ducks this season.

The Ducks have lost 12 straight road games.

The local hockey teams haven't enjoyed the finest of seasons in 2011. Both the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks have new coaches, and the two clubs face off Thursday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The game marks the first game for Darryl Sutter as head coach of the Kings.

The Kings have lost six of their last eight games, though they did go 2-2 on a four-game road trip under interim coach John Stevens after the firing of Terry Murray. Anaheim is 2-6-1 under new coach Bruce Boudreau, including losses in each of their last three games. The Ducks have lost 12 straight road games.

The Kings are the lowest-scoring club in the NHL, averaging just 2.18 goals per contest this season. The Ducks aren't that much better, at 2.36 goals per game, good for 28th in the 30-team NHL. This is the fourth matchup of the season between the two teams, with the Kings winning two of three games, including one shootout win on November 16.
