The UCLA Bruins have landed everyone they could possibly want. Can they translate it into results on the court?

Tony Parker, a 6'9", 250 pound center from Lithonia, Georgia and considered a top 10 center in this year's recruiting class, ended up picking UCLA over Georgia, Ohio State and Duke. Parker now could very well challenge for a starting big spot along with Josh Smith and the Wear twins at center, making them the deepest frontline in the conference

Parker now joins perhaps the top recruiting class in college basketball in Westwood. Shabazz Muhammad (considered the top NBA Draft prospect in 2013) committed to the Bruins a few weeks ago over Duke and Kentucky, providing UCLA with an elite slashing talent that could really swing games offensively. Kyle Anderson also provides a unique point guard presence that could. Jordan Adams isn't quite as highly regarded as those two players, but he figures to be an elite slasher down the line.

Ben Howland landed the best of the best in Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson. Now he and UCLA wait on the decision of Tony Parker, who could make this recruiting class one for the ages.

Tony Parker is 18 years old and a senior in high school. He lives outside Atlanta. He's 6-foot-9 in shoes, has a 7-foot-1 wingspan, weighs 275 pounds and is very good at basketball. In 2011 ESPN named him the National Junior Player of the Year and this season he became a McDonald's All-American. On Monday he's scheduled to announce which college he'll attend. In the running are Duke, Georgia, Kansas, Ohio State and UCLA, but those who've followed Parker's recruitment think Georgia and UCLA are the frontrunners. Declares recruiting pundit Eric Bossi of Rivals.com, "the Bruins and Bulldogs have been generating the most buzz and for now at least, they are the two safest bets when it comes to predicting which school Parker will choose."

If he makes the call for UCLA, he'll be the capstone of one of the greatest recruiting classes in Bruin history. Already in the fold are Jordan Adams, a sharpshooting wing who's the Bruins' first-ever signing out of legendary hoops feeder school Oak Hill Academy, and a pair of dazzling crown jewels: Kyle Anderson, whom the respected Jonathan Givony of Draft Express calls "the most unconventional player in high school basketball... [with] the size of a power forward and the skill set of a point guard," and Shabazz Muhammad, by consensus the top wing player in high-school ball. Givony predicts that Muhammad will be the second pick in the 2013 NBA draft. NBADraft.net says Muhammad will go number one. No one expects him or Anderson to spend more than a season in Westwood. They're the kind of super-elite, one-and-done talents that John Calipari just molded into a national-championship squad at Kentucky.

With or without Parker, Ben Howland has bagged a hell of a class, which is a touch odd considering how close he's recently come to losing his job. The past four years have seen his once-shining program slide into the muck. Twice he's failed to reach the NCAA tournament. This season, a Bruins squad picked to win the Pac-12 played horribly and got featured in Sports Illustrated for all the wrong reasons. Guys who've transferred out of Howland's program (Mike Moser, Matt Carlino) have flourished at their new schools. Bad seeds Howland chose to coddle (Nikola Dragovic, Reeves Nelson) embarrassed the university. Typically at this stage of a program's decomposition, the embattled coach doesn't have the luxury of reloading with A-list talent.

To understand how UCLA and Howland arrived at this moment, you need to rewind to April 5, 2008. That night, Howland led his best team - conference champions and top seeds in the West Regional, led by future NBA superstars Kevin Love and Russell Westbook - into the Final Four in San Antonio. The Final Four that season had no easy outs: it was (and still is) the only time all four number-one seeds advanced to the tournament semifinals. But Howland's roster was loaded and cohesive. They were easily the best UCLA squad since the 1995 team that brought home the school's only post-Wooden banner.

The semifinal game that night against Memphis, though, was a catastrophe. Calipari exposed Howland as tactically inflexible to a fatal degree. With one awesome point guard (Derrick Rose), one complimentary wing scorer (Chris Douglas-Roberts) and a clutch of decent role players, the speedy Memphis attack blew through Howland's D like wind through a fence. At no point would Howland switch to a zone to force the game into the half court. Only with Memphis far out of reach would he switch Westbrook onto Rose, who to that point had straight destroyed Darren Collison. It's not that Howland lost. It's that he lost so badly (78 to 63 was the final score), with so much talent and having been so egregiously outmaneuvered by Calipari. The first cracks began to appear in Howland's public image and hold over the program.

Had UCLA won that night and defeated Kansas in the title game, it's not hard to imagine the last four seasons unfolding very differently. Perhaps with a banner to his name, Howland doesn't feel the pressure to accommodate talented bad actors like Nelson. Perhaps the whispers about unhappiness among his former players, that his plodding offensive system stifled Love, Westbrook and Collison, never gain traction. Perhaps Jrue Holiday, Malcom Lee and Tyler Honeycutt have enough confidence in Howland's regime not to dash to the NBA at the earliest opportunity.

But there lies the explanation for why Howland still kills on the recruiting trail. Guys he's coached at UCLA almost always outperform expectations when they get to the pros. Love and Westbrook are max-contract All-Stars. Collison and Holiday are starting point guards on playoff-bound teams. Arron Afflalo makes almost $8 million a year as the Nuggets' starting two guard. Even less-heralded players like Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Ryan Hollins have carved out pro careers for themselves with the defensive fundamentals drilled into them by Howland. Whatever else can be said about Howland, he gets guys ready for the NBA, and that's what's getting him into the living rooms of the most sought-after prep ballers.

So long as this remains the case, he has a chance to rescale the heights he reached in 2008, if he puts all that talent to good use. The offense must change. You don't sign Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson so you can walk the ball up the court and swing it around the perimeter for 25 seconds. Those two need freedom to punish opponents with their creativity. Howland has to find a way to get center Joshua Smith into semi-decent shape. (Conditioning may also be a concern with Parker, if he joins up). He also needs to find a dependable outside threat. That could be Adams, or it could be returning sophomore Normal Powell. A Pac-12 title run and top-10 ranking are the baseline expectations for next year's team. Oh, and off-court incidents need to be nonexistent. Falling well short of any of these goals will mean the 2013-14 season begins with a new UCLA coach on the sidelines.

Tony Parker has been linked a lot to UCLA basketball the past few weeks, particularly after Shabazz Muhammad made the move to become a Son of Westwood a little time ago. Muhammad, Parker, and current UCLA commit Kyle Anderson have all been linked close to each other, and it figures that the big man from Georgia would be the logical man to complete the trio.

Now the big man is ready to make his decision. Parker is moving his announcement from this Friday to next Monday to get ready to make his final decision. Here are his final five: UCLA, Duke, Georgia, Kansas and Ohio State. Everyone appears to be in it.

"That’s something that got started at [an all-star game] … it doesn’t have any legs to it," Miller Grove High School coach Sharman White told the AJC on Sunday.

"Tony has not committed yet. That’s the best and only way I can put it."

The Bruins should still be considered the prohibitive favorite though. Wouldn't that be quite the freshman trio if those three teamed up in Westwood?

Tony Parker has the size, strength and talent to become an impact player at the next level. The four-star big man, who comes in at 6'9'' and 280 pounds, received a ton of interest from programs all over the nation and is set to make a final decision in the coming week. With schools like UCLA, Kansas, Ohio State and hometown Georgia all vying for his services, you can bet it'll be a tough decision for the young man.

Reports had surfaced a few days ago that Parker was committing to the UCLA Bruins, but those were refuted by his head coach this weekend, according to The Atlanta Journal Constitution:

Tony Parker's coach denied a report that the AJC's Mr. Georgia basketball has decided to sign with UCLA.

"That's something that got started at [an all-star game] ... it doesn't have any legs to it," Miller Grove High School coach Sharman White told the AJC on Sunday.

"Tony has not committed yet. That's the best and only way I can put it."

[...]

"Tony is ready for it to get over with," White said. "He's planning on doing it on Friday. We haven't set a time yet but when we do, we'll let everybody know."

The Bruins remain very involved in his recruitment, though, and many feel he could choose to play for them next season. There are two potential issues that come with UCLA, though: playing time and the distance from home.

The program already has Travis and David Wear in their front court, twins who project to claim a ton of minutes in 2012. They also have enormous center Josh Smith, who could become a potential All-America candidate if he finally gets in shape. In a day and age where recruits seldom welcome sitting the bench in their freshman season, playing time may be tough to come by in Westwood.

The other issue is the distance from his family in Georgia. Los Angeles is upwards of 2,000 miles away from his home, which could be a problem for the 18-year-old.

At the end of the day, there is a reason Ben Howland is among the final coaches hoping to secure a commitment from Parker. He likes the school and the facilities, and no one would be surprised if he put on a Bruins hat on Friday.

Shabazz Muhammad's commitment to play basketball at UCLA on Wednesday caused many skeptics to wonder if UCLA's Adidas sponsorship was the cause.

The 2012 National Champions, Kentucky, along with traditional basketball powerhouse Duke, were the other two schools in Muhammad's final three — two schools sponsored by Nike.

Muhammad's critics also point out the fact that the five-star recruit chose a school that missed the NCAA tournament two of the past three seasons over Duke and Kentucky.

Adidas currently sponsors Muhammad's sister, Asia, a professional tennis player and was the sponsor for Muhammad's AAU team, Dream Vision.

So did the shoe company have any influence on his decision?

Muhammad's dad, Ron Holmes, cleared up any confusion in an interview with the Los Angeles Times:

"I don't understand when they say Adidas had a presence here," Holmes said in a telephone interview from his Las Vegas home. "Adidas didn't tell us where to go to school. ... If they're saying that Adidas is giving me money, that is a downright lie."

Will people take Holmes at his word? Of course, Muhammad's father is not going to say flat-out that a shoe company influenced his son's decision. The evidence might be overwhelming for those that speculate that Adidas played a role.

Per Gary Parrish from CBS Sports:

it would be naive for anybody to suggest the financial relationship Adidas has with people around Muhammad didn't factor into his decision to attend a Pac-12 school coming off a disappointing season highlighted by controversy. I mean, Adidas has sponsored Muhammad's summer team (Dream Vision) for years, and his tennis-playing sister (Asia Muhammad) has an Adidas contract even though she's ranked outside the top 375 in the world. This stuff has to matter on some level, you know?

The UCLA Bruins already have quite a bit of talent assembled on their roster, but they may have just taken the next step to restoring the roar in Westwood following Wednesday evening. The nation's best prospect, Shabazz Muhammad, gave his pledge to Ben Howland and UCLA over Kentucky and Duke, immediately giving the Bruins one of the more dynamic guards in the country.

ESPN updated their top-25 preseason rankings on Thursday. Where was UCLA spotted?

Here are the rankings from Andy Katz. He has them ranked No. 13:

The Bruins might be the most fascinating team of 2012-13. How will this all shake out? Not only is the embattled Ben Howland bringing in the No. 2 recruiting class led by a pair of top-five players (guards Shabazz Muhammad and Kyle Anderson), but also adds another stud recruit in Jordan Adams and UNC transfer Larry Drew II. And who knows what you'll get with a frontcourt that includes the Wear twins and the enigma that is Joshua Smith. Tyler Lamb and Norman Powell will also play signifcant roles. This has a true boom-or-bust feel to it. Nothing less than Howland's job security rides on it.

If everything goes right for the Bruins in 2012-13, they could have more talent than just about any team in the nation. They have one of the better recruiting classes of anyone, the Wear twins and Josh Smith are capable of dominating the paint, and guys like Lamb and Powell could both be in for breakout years with so many playmakers around them.

It will not be easy for Ben Howland to get this unit to gel early, especially with so many newcomers to the program, but they could be very dangerous come March.

Shabazz Muhammad is by all accounts one of the candidates to be the top recruit in the 2012 class. And he just made UCLA basketball nationally relevant again, perhaps even saving Ben Howland's job in the process.

Muhammad committed to UCLA over Kentucky and Duke just moments ago on ESPNU. Muhammad will bring a much needed offensive injection from the wing position and make UCLA one of the instant Pac-12 title contenders. With Kyle Anderson at point guard plus Jordan Adams and potentially Tony Parker, UCLA will potentially have the top recruiting class in the country.

While it's too early to know if Muhammad will be good enough to lift the Bruins back into the national conversation, UCLA does look an awfully lot better than it did a few weeks ago. They have great offensive talent at every position and should be one of the toughest teams in the country to stop, particularly in a full court contest. Howland was banking on landing Shabazz, and now he has a real dangerous basketball team to work with in Westwood.
