The USC Trojans played their first road game tonight in Tempe, Ariz. against the Arizona State Sun Devils, and will wish to forget about it right away as the Sun Devils blowout the Trojans at home 43-22.

The rout began midway through the third quarter with an eight play, 76-yard drive that resulted in a ASU Cameron Marshall 3-yard rushing touchdown, which made ASU regain its lead against USC 28-22.

The following drive, USC running back Marc Tyler fumbled after rushing for 17 yards and was recovered by ASU Deveron Carr. USC had four turnovers for the game.

At the start of the fourth, USC was driving the field as they cruised for 73 yards on 10 plays. However Matt Barkley was sacked by Greg Smith and fumbled the ball at the ASU 14 yard line. The Sun Devils converted on a touchdown drive from that fumble on a Marshall rush for four yards.

Barkley went 21 for 33 passing with 227 total yards passing, one touchdown, and two critical interceptions. One of the interceptions was caught by ASU linebacker Vontaze Burfict in the second quarter, which ASU drove in for a touchdown. The other came in the fourth quarter caught by Shelly Lyons, who ran it in for the touchdown and ultimately put the game away.

USC had no answer for Brock Osweiler, who completed 25 of his 32 passes for 223 yards and two touchdown with no interceptions. The ASU running offense also accumulated 169 yards, with Marshall leading the corp with 141 yards on the ground.

Not all things were stormy for USC, however. Down 21-9 at the half, USC came storming back with 14 unanswered points. One of those touchdowns was scored on a pass from Barkley to Marquise Lee, who continues to have a solid freshman campaign.

USC’s Tyler had 149 yards rushing on 22 carries to lead USC in rushing, scoring a touchdown.

USC will try to regroup as they face the Arizona Wildcats at home at 12:30 p.m. PT.

The ASU Sun Devils lead the visiting USC Trojans 21-9 at half time.

The USC Trojans defense made one crucial error early in the desert in Tempe, but it was a big one. Cameron Marshall (playing with a sprained ankle) took his opening rush 70 yards down the left sideline on the opening Arizona State drive into the end zone to give the Sun Devils an early 7-0 lead.

USC got on the board after taking advantage of good field position, getting an Arizona pass interference penalty and a few Marc Tyler rushes to set up a Andre Heidari 41 yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.

ASU went back down the field a few drives later, taking advantage of USC safety T.J. McDonald's SECOND personal foul penalty. It set the Sun Devils up deep in USC territory, and Brock Osweiller found Gerell Robinson on the right side to make it 14-3. Matt Barkley then marched USC's offense down the field with big passes to Marqise Lee, Brandon Carswell and Robert Woods, but Woods's third down throw was knocked down by ASU cornerback Deveron Carr to set up another Heidari field goal.

The USC Trojans got off to a sluggish start to begin the game.

Arizona State running back Cameron Marshall went 70 yards and scored ASU’s first touchdown on their first drive of the game. But after the score, USC’s defense stepped it up as they didn’t allow a score for the rest of the quarter.

USC freshman running back Amir Carlisle entered the game, which was a mild surprise. Head coach Lane Kiffin said in the past week that he would play Carlisle and the coach kept his word and not redshirting the true freshman.

USC safety TJ McDonald was flagged for a personal foul as he leveled Jamal Miles with an illegal hit.

USC scored on a 41-yard field goal by Andre Heidari after a missed field goal at 46 yards, but was waived off after a penalty from ASU linebacker Vontaze Burfict.

The USC Trojans and the Arizona St. Sun Devils are doing a lot of chirping before Saturday night's crucial Pac-12 South tilt, and the two most prominent players are even getting into it. Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley called out Sun Devils linebacker Vontaze Burfict for going extracurricular on the football field. Baxter Holmes of the Los Angeles Times has more.

Barkley isn't much of a Burfict fan.

"He's a dirty player," the quarterback said, basing his opinion on what he suggests were efforts by the linebacker to injure him by diving at his knees during a high school game.

"His switch is always on. And it's not a good switch."

I'm sure Barkley is the first person to ever call Burfict dirty. Who would have ever thought a player who draws countless unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and lays flagrantly huge and sometimes extraneous hits on offensive playmakers would be considered a football outlaw?

Outside the Barkley accusation is a pretty sobering story on how Burfict grew up in a tumultuous neighborhood, came very close to death on multiple occasions, and channeled most of his rage into the football field. It's easy to see why Burfict is the way he is.

Barkley has to be ready for that 'dirty' player on Saturday when USC takes on ASU, because there's no doubt Burfict will be gunning for him.

For more on USC football, head to Conquest Chronicles.
This weekend presents the USC Trojans with their first road test of the season as they travel to Arizona State University for a Pac-12 showdown. History shows that the Trojans have won 11 straight games in this series, including five straight games in Tempe. This series, however, is far less comfortable than those records suggest.

According to a report by ESPN LA's Mark Saxon, the Trojans are getting physical in practice this week to prepare for ASU. That includes hits after the whistle, cheap-shots and taunting. Why? It's simple: to get the team ready for its battle in the dessert.

USC has had several heated encounters with ASU over the past few years, and USC players have reported several dirty hits and plays by the Sun Devils during that game. Last season, for example, linebacker Vontaze Burficit was called for a late hit that ultimately helped USC extend its final drive and win the game.

But Burficit's case isn't an isolated incident. The players report frequent hits when the two teams get together, and coach Lane Kiffin wants his team to be prepared for that. The result has been late hits in practice all week. It's an interesting strategy: let's just hope that no one gets seriously hurt between now and Saturday's game.
