San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Eugenio Velez narrowly scored the eventual game-winning run in the ninth inning, as the Los Angeles Dodgers further damaged the San Francisco Giants' playoff chances with a 2-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series.

The pitchers' duel between Clayton Kershaw and Tim Lincecum lived up to its billing, with each ace lasting eight innings.

Kershaw (18-5) continued his NL Cy Young Award campaign by allowing just one unearned run on three hits. The lefty walked one and struck out nine to improve to 4-0 in five outings against the reigning World Series champions this year.

Lincecum, meanwhile, was working on a shutout before giving up the tying run in the eighth. He retired the first two in the frame before Matt Kemp hit a dribbler up the third-base line that stayed fair.

Kemp stole second prior to Juan Rivera poking an RBI single up the middle for Los Angeles' only hit in 10 chances with runners in scoring position.

Lincecum wound up allowing six hits and two walks while fanning six in the no- decision. He threw 127 pitches and was pulled in favor of Santiago Casilla, who gave up a leadoff single to Rod Barajas in the ninth.

Velez, in as a pinch-runner, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved up another 90 feet on a wild pitch by Casilla (2-2). Pinch-hitter Jamey Carroll then hit a chopper to second, and Velez slid in just before the tag.

Javy Guerra set down the side in order in the bottom half to notch his 17th save and send the Giants 8 1/2 games behind NL West-leading Arizona.

The only run in the first seven frames came in the third when Pablo Sandoval singled home Justin Christian, who reached base safely on Dee Gordon's throwing error.

Game Notes

Kershaw has given up just four runs in 34 2/3 innings (1.04 ERA) against he Giants this year...The Giants have lost four of Lincecum's last five starts...Kemp's stolen base was his 38th of the season. The Dodgers shuffled their starting rotation slightly. Dana Eveland, who was scheduled to pitch Wednesday, then Thursday in Washington D.C. but was rained out twice, will start on Saturday. That gives everyone but Kershaw an extra day of rest. Hiroki Kuroda will start the series finale for the Dodgers, on Sunday.

Clayton Kershaw is 4-1 with a 1.41 ERA in 10 career games against the Giants.

Clayton Kershaw matches up with Tim Lincecum for the third time this season as the Los Angeles Dodgers open up a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park. The weekend series ends the Dodgers' season-long four-city road trip which began as 11 games but will end as a 10-game trip thanks to Thursday's cancellation in Washington D.C. against the Nationals.

Kershaw beat Lincecum in both matchups this season, as the left-hander did not allow a run on opening day in Los Angeles nor July 20 in San Francisco. In both games, Lincecum allowed one run in seven innings and got tagged with the loss. Kershaw could use a boost for his Cy Young candidacy, and two matchups against Lincecum in 12 days should provide that opportunity.

In addition to Friday night, both Kershaw and Lincecum will likely pitch against one another on September 20 in the opener of a three-game series in Los Angeles.

Kershaw is 17-5 on the season with a 2.45 ERA, and he leads the National League with 222 strikeouts, 10 behind Justin Verlander for the major league lead. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, but with eight scoreless innings Friday night against the Giants, Kershaw would overtake Johnny Cueto of the Cincinnati Reds for the major league lead in ERA, 2.3588 to 2.3632.

The Dodgers beat the Giants in three of four games in Los Angeles to open the season, but the Giants have won six of the past eight meetings, including four of six in Los Angeles. The Dodgers have lost their last four series at AT&T Park, dating back to last season, and are 3-9 in their last 12 games in San Francisco. All three wins were starts by Clayton Kerhsaw.
