Seth Smith hit a mammoth two-run home run into the second deck in right field in the seventh inning, giving the Colorado Rockies a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday afternoon at Coors Field. The Dodgers only allowed three hits, but Colorado made them count. Chad Billingsley gave the Dodgers what they needed, a long outing to save the bullpen, but he faltered in his final two innings.

The Dodgers held a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, but after a walk to Jason Giambi, Billingsley allowed the home run to Smith to give the Rockies the lead. Billingsley got through the seventh inning at 105 pitches, but because the Dodgers were working with a short bullpen Billingsley started the eighth as well. Colorado picked up an unearned insurance run to pad their lead.

The win snapped a major league record 17-game Sunday losing streak for the Rockies.

James Loney might want to warm up in the bullpen before every game. Just in case he would have been needed in an emergency, Loney warmed up in the bullpen before the game, as he was a pitcher in high school. Loney didn't get to pitch, but he did have a day at the plate, with four hits, including a home run. Loney has hit three of his six home runs this season at Coors Field.

Matt Kemp had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Kevin Millwood pitched seven innings to pick up his first win of the season for Colorado. The Dodgers conclude their road trip with a trip to St. Louis beginning Monday night. Nathan Eovaldi faces Chris Carpenter in the series opener.

The Rockies' last win on Sunday was a 9-5 win over the Cubs on April 17. Colorado is 2-17 on Sundays this season, and 57-51 on all other days. This is likely a fluke more than anything, but still an interesting and quirky run.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' finale on Sunday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field has the potential to be one of the more memorable games of the season. Not because of the teams involved, or a pseudo battle for third place, but rather because we might see a position player pitch.

In seven career appearances at Coors Field, Chad Billingsley is 1-5 with a 7.88 ERA.

Chad Billingsley has struggled in his career at Coors Field, but the Los Angeles Dodgers need him to pitch deep into Sunday's series finale against the Colorado Rockies in Denver. The Dodgers used all seven relief pitchers on their roster in Saturday's 13-inning loss to Colorado, so it stands to reason some of those pitchers would be unavailable in the series finale. A number of relievers threw a lot of pitches on Saturday:

Closer Javy Guerra threw 32 pitches

Scott Elbert threw 25 pitches after throwing 16 pitches Friday

Matt Guerrier threw 23 pitches after throwing 16 pitches Friday

Blake Hawksworth threw 13 pitches after throwing 12 pitches Friday

Mike MacDougal threw 22 pitches after throwing four pitches Friday

Hong-Chih Kuo only faced three batters, but did so over two innings, and the club has been cautious with Kuo regarding pitching in multiple innings

The Dodgers have only had a reliever throw on three straight days three times this season. What this all means is that Chad Billingsley simply needs to have a good outing, which has been hard to come by at Coors Field.

Billingsley has made six starts and one relief appearance in his career, and the results have not been good. Billingsley is 1-5 with a 7.88 ERA with 21 walks and 19 strikeouts. This season Billingsley has lost both starts in Colorado, allowing 11 runs and 19 hits in 7 2/3 innings. The Dodgers beat Billingsley on April 6 and June 10.

Kevin Millwood starts for the Rockies, making his third start for Colorado. Millwood was on a minor league deal with the Red Sox this season, but Boston released him on August 6. Two days later he signed with the Rockies, and in two starts he has allowed seven runs in 13 innings, with two walks and nine strikeouts. However, Millwood has allowed five home runs in those 13 innings, so expect fireworks in Colorado today.
