It's fall. There are so many traditions of this season that always hold up. The nights get shorter, the trees get barer, and USC Trojans running backs start grumbling about their lack of snaps.

This year it's Dillon Baxter, who saw pretty much no significant game time on. Baxter found the situation so irritating that he had to bring his family in to talk to head coach Lane Kiffin about his lack of touches. Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports that Baxter and his family had to talk with Kiffin about his role on the team, and that Kiffin made it clear how Baxter would see the field more.

"There's really not much I can do," Baxter said Saturday. "Just keep working hard and I guess when they want to put me in, they'll put me in."

Kiffin said Baxter did not talk of transferring during a meeting that was requested by the family.

"That's something that … happens a lot, especially with your highly recruited players, especially if they're not playing," Kiffin said. "I call them 'Tell the truth' meetings."

Baxter is still a sophomore, so it'd be surprising if he decided to bolt this early in the season. Still, it's not boding well for Baxter if he does decide to transfer (and it doesn't look particularly good for him that he had to get his parents to talk to his coach). It would indicate that he doesn't believe that he can ever beat out D.J. Morgan and Curtis McNeal for significant playing action in a USC uniform, and would need to look elsewhere to get on the field.

Such is life when you have a hundred four- to five-star recruits to placate.

Javorious Allen was supposed to be part of USC's 2011 recruiting class, but qualification was taking time and holding "Buck" back from being part of the team. There was definite talent there; Allen had been injured for awhile and had seen his ranking drop, but there was definite upside.

Ok, technically, that's not true. There are a lot of things that the USC Trojans have settled on (click here for offense, click here for defense, click here for special teams).

Matt Barkley is the starting quarterback.

Robert Woods is the starting wide receiver.

Rhett Ellison is the starting fullback.

The center Khaled Holmes and tackles Matt Kalil and Kevin Graf are firmly situated in place.

Three of the four defensive linemen (Christian Tupou at NT, DaJohn Harris at DT, and Nick Perry at DE) have earned their spots.

Two of the secondary (sophomore Nickell Robey at cornerback, free safety T.J. McDonald) are both settled into position.

And....that's about it.

USC still has a four way battle going at running back, which probably means the starter and backup won't be announced until later this week. Expect it to be some combination of Dillon Baxter and Curtis McNeal, but D.J. Morgan and Amir Carlisle are talented youngsters, and Kiffin might think of making them play.

The backup quarterback is walk-on junior John Manoogian, who beat out Cody Kessler and Max Wittek. I hadn't even known Manoogian was on the team before I read the depth chart. I'm guessing USC really needs to keep Barkley healthy, because neither Kessler nor Wittek are close to ready to burn redshirts face top-level defenders if a guy who barely scrimmaged is in the second position.

Freshman Marqise Lee could be lining up next to Robert Woods, following in the footsteps of Robert Woods as the second straight true frosh to see PT. Or it could be senior Brandon Carswell stepping in. George Farmer or Brice Butler OR Kyle Prater could be the third man in. Or De'Von Flournoy. Or Robbie Boyer. Or Victor Blackwell. Terrible dilemmas USC suffers (commence rest of conference rolling eyes).

No one wants to play left guard at USC according to Kiffin. Currently there are three guys in there fighting for the spot, but Kiffin's frankness is usually not a good sign for whoever wins the position.

USC has three underclass tight ends battling for the number one position. A little bit of a downgrade from Ellison and Blake Ayles.

John Martinez looks like he'll be the starter at right guard, as Aundrey Walker is barely able to stay on the field at a gargantuan 375 pounds.

Devon Kennard was supposed to be the starter at defensive end, but Wes Horton is pushing him. Kennard's odyssey all over the USC defense won't end.

NONE of the linebackers have secured their spots. Chris Gallippo might if he was healthy, but if he isn't, it's not out of the question that three freshman/redshirt freshman are playing in the middle this season. Scary.

I'm too tired to discuss the secondary.

Anyway, don't think too much of this chart. It sure does show a lot of depth, but when it comes to starters and backups, nothing is really settled.

With no word on how long USC suspended tailback Marc Tyler could sit out this season, the battle for who wins the starting job opening week against Minnesota becomes all the more pertinent. Scott M. Reid talked with USC head coach Lane Kiffin, and found out that the remaining top four running backs are still in contention to win the position.

Let's find out more about each of them.

Junior Curtis McNeal is the most experienced of the bunch--but only in terms of years. Because by experienced, I mean he's rushed six times for 33 yards. In 2009. Plus he's coming off a year of academic ineligibilty. This isn't a candidate who inspires confidence.

Sophomore Dillon Baxter actually has carried the ball far more than McNeal, and that was in his redshirt year. 4.7 yards per carry isn't anything to be too disappointed about, and now Baxter could be the go-to guy on opening day.

Redshirt freshman D.J. Morgan and true freshman Amir Carlisle are both in the mix, but you figure both are for sure just to keep the spirits and effort of the two youngsters high while more experienced players handle the load.

Regardless of who gets named the starter, you figure that no one in USC will feel too confident about any of these guys being the workhorse. But running back by committee doesn't sound too bad ...

If the slate was clean, Marc Tyler would likely be the starting tailback for the USC Trojans come opening day. Tyler is in his fifth year in Los Angeles, entering his final campaign, is head and shoulders above every other tailback when it comes to his experience, and would be the perfect feature back in an offense that relies on balance and utilizing all the weapons in the arsenal. And he has finally cleared his suspension time, so he's able to attend practice with the team.

Still, Tyler will sit against Minnesota and won't participate in training camp (although he is practicing with the scout team). He has a long way to go to atone for his offseason transgressions, and it's unclear as to whether he will actually play this season. It's going to be hard for Lane Kiffin to resist the temptation to play Tyler. Even if Dillon Baxter and Curtis McNeal prove to be a capable one-two punch at tailback and Amir Carlisle impacts the offense early on, no one provides the pass protection in the backfield that Tyler does. And Matt Barkley is probably going to need every second he can get to dissect defenses this season.

It shouldn't be long before Kiffin turns back to Tyler, particularly if he stays on track. USC needs as complete a roster as possible to offset any potential deficiencies, and Tyler is too good to leave on the sidelines.

The USC Trojans backup quarterback battle has been one of the most pertinent to the future of the Pac-12. With Matt Barkley likely leaving for the NFL draft, it's a huge deal who replaces him to lead USC back from probation and into an uncertain future.

Looks like Cody Kessler is the man for now. Lane Kiffin named the true freshman the second-string quarterback ahead of Max Wittek and Jesse Scroggins.

"We went with Cody, and, really, I know this is abnormal to hear, but it’s really not a reflection on their play," Kiffin said after Wednesday’s practice, in which Kessler received all of the second-team snaps during scout-team drills. "They’ve both played so well. I know both of them could go in and play right now.

"This was not a big competition that Cody won, necessarily. It was just what we went with, to give him the No. 2 snaps."

Kessler was a late-bloomer in high school, but it was a full bloom. In his senior year at Centennial, he completed 70% of his passes, threw 36 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He enrolled early at USC and participated in spring practice, so he definitely has a leg up on other players.

He's been close to perfect in his spring and fall scrimmages (should be noted that it's against mostly second and third unit defenders), showing a familiarity with the offense. You can tell how intelligent he is when you listen to his interviews and that he's able to pick up Kiffin's offense rather quickly.

Head coach Lane Kiffin announced wide receiver Markeith Ambles has been dismissed from the program. While the coach did not offer specifics into the situation, Ambles has struggled to stay academically eligible since joining the team and has had multiple disciplinary issues the last two years.

Gary Klein of The LA Times has the report:

"We wish him the best of luck and we're moving forward, and hopefully he does good things," said Kiffin, who declined to discuss the specifics of Ambles' departure.

There had been speculation that Ambles, a sophomore from Georgia, might remain at USC and redshirt. But a series of disciplinary issues in his first season, coupled with USC's scholarship limitations over the next three seasons, might have contributed to his exit.

Ambles could not be reached for comment.

It sounds like a bad situation for all parties involved and the move to dismiss Ambles is probably for the best. Despite being talented and having the potential to be a solid wide receiver for both this season and beyond, keeping your grades and attitude at a high standard are a must for a USC football player. This was not the case and now the two sides have parted ways.

Trojans freshman tight end Junior Pomee, who has certainly had an interesting first few months since committing to the program, will miss the entire 2011 season after breaking his foot in camp earlier this week. No official word on whether he will redshirt or not.

Pomee has been an interesting fellow to say the least. A highly-ranked four-star recruit coming out of high school, there were rumors of the tight end potentially transferring after he was not in attendance for multiple practices earlier in the summer, though nothing ever came of it. The broken foot will do nothing but complicate Pomee's attempts to get back on the field.

Hopefully the freshman is able to make a complete recovery and start to see some playing time in 2012. He was unlikely to contribute too much this season, though a few reps on the second string offense and on special teams were not out of the question.
