In a match Galaxy fans have been predicting for weeks, the Galaxy went down 3-0 to the Portland Timbers and really the game wasn't that close. In ninety minutes, the Galaxy only managed one shot on target. While they controlled possession to a wide margin, they were useless with the ball, with no accurate passing between the levels. The Los Angeles Galaxy looked without an offensive spark, to a degree not seen since the 4-0 loss in Salt Lake.

The defensive changes everyone hoped for came at halftime, with Juan Pablo Angel and Michael Stephens coming out, and Adam Cristman coming in with Miguel Lopez. It's unfortunate when it's the logical choice to replace one of your Designated Players at halftime, but that's the boat the Galaxy are in. Dan Keat saw some playing time too, one of the few bright spots of the match. He came in for Juninho in the 81'. Keat didn't waste his time, taking two shots, the only other player with more than one shot beside Chris Birchall.

Portland scored it's third goal on a header from a corner kick. Sal Zizzo took it, and Eric Brunner managed to get his head above the rest in the 68'. The 6'4" defender had scored one goal this season. This was the dagger that put the LA Galaxy away for good.

While the Galaxy's undefeated streak had to end sometime, it's hard to see it come in such an embarrassing fashion. The team will need to come back to Los Angeles and regroup quickly, as they'll host FC Dallas on Saturday. The loss was only the third of the season for the Galaxy, who last lost on May 2nd to Dallas in Frisco, Tx.

The Los Angeles Galaxy let in two goals before halftime. Meanwhile, they haven’t gotten off a shot. Mike Chabala in the 26’ and Jorge Peralta in the 33’ put the Portland Timbers up 2-0 on a Galaxy team that haven’t shown any life in the match. Chabala’s goal was assisted by Nagbe, a strike from outside the box to Josh Saunder’s right. The ball picked up a deflection on the way and that was little Saunders could do. Then came Perlata’s shot, beating AJ DeLaGarza to the ball and sliding one past Josh Saunders.

Needless to say that the Galaxy need to make significant halftime adjustments. The statistics show the Galaxy staying in the game. They control a 60% of the possession and have been more accurate in their passing, but soccer statistics often lie. The Galaxy have shown no offensive thrust to connect that midfield with the forwards. Donovan and Angel might as well have been on another planet, because that pass between the two levels just wasn’t happening.

Moving Landon Donovan back to the midfield would help, bringing in Lopez at halftime would too. Bruce Arena should also seriously consider getting Angel out and bringing in Adam Cristman.

The Portland Timbers made a late change to their starting lineup, scratching Eddie Johnson and giving Kenny Cooper the start at forward for the first time since July 26th. The USMNT member only has three goals since joining the Timbers. Cooper had been playing for 1860 Munich, and due to MLS roster rules, had to go to the team at the top of the waiver list as a returning National team player. The expansion Timbers were quick to bring him on.

However, despite his pedigree, Cooper was benched for English footballer Eddie Johnson when he didn’t produce goals. Johnson has just one goal in six appearances, but was scheduled to start before it was reported he was being held out with a concussion. It’s unclear when Johnson suffered the concussion, and why he was in the originally reported starting XI.

The Los Angeles Galaxy are set to play the second game of a Northwest swing, taking on the Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field Wednesday night at 7:00 pdt.

The Los Angeles Galaxy are set to play the second game of a Northwest swing, taking on the Portland Timbers at Jeld-Wen Field tonight at 7:00 pdt. The game, broadcast on ESPN2, is the second of a two game home , stand for the Timbers, who drew 2-2 with Toronto FC last weekend. The Galaxy are coming off a huge win in the first leg of this road trip, a 0-4 win in Vancouver.

The Galaxy had little trouble on the turf at Empire Field, with a Landon Donovan brace paving the way for the large victory. The suddenly potent offense also featured goals from Sean Franklin and Adam Cristman. This was all without star David Beckham, who returns to the team tonight after serving a one game suspension for yellow card accumulation.

The last time these two clubs met, the first meeting between these two clubs in MLS history, the Galaxy were up just four minutes into the match on a Chad Barrett goal. Landon Donovan found Barrett near the top of the penalty area, Barrett controlled the ball with his shoulder, knocked it down in front of him, and ripped a shot from just outside the area past Troy Perkins.

Four minutes later, LA had doubled their lead when Portland's Randy Wallace grabbed Landoon Donovan inside the penalty area and the Galaxy were awarded the penalty. Converting the penalty, Donovan opened his MLS goal account for the season.

Portland raced out to a 2-0 lead in their last match, against Toronto, but were unable to hold it. The Timbers opened the lead midway through the first half, when Sal Zizzo flicked the ball to Diego Chara in the midfield and he found Eddie Johnson, who let it fly from outside the area. A second half penalty made it 2-0, but two goals at the 71' and 82' for Toronto gave them the unlikely comeback.

The Portland Timbers have just 22 points from 20 games, for eighth place in the Western Conference. The Timbers haven't won at home since May.
