The big story from the day in baseball wasn't the Colby Rasmus trade to Toronto, or the pending Carlos Beltran trade to the Giants, nor was it the aftermath of Jerry Meals blowing a call in the 19th inning in Atlanta last night. Ervin Santana stole the show by pitching the ninth no-hitter in Angels history, beating the Indians 3-1 in Cleveland. However, lost in even that was that the Angels remained on fire, to keep pace with Texas in the American League West.

The Angels have won three straight series, and an amazing 11 of their last 12 series. Since June 13, the Angels are 26-12, a .684 winning percentage second only in baseball to the Phillies at 25-11 (.694). The Angels are two and a half games behind the Rangers, who play tonight against the Twins.

But for now, let the Angels celebrate. They open a four-game series in Detroit Thursday night, but tonight is a night to celebrate. According to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, the Angels already started, in a decidedly baseball way:

Waiting in front of Santana's locker after he showered -- 4 bottles of champagne chilling in emptied plastic buckets of Double Bubble gum.

Baseball is awesome.

Ervin Santana made history Wednesday morning in Cleveland, as he struck out 10 Indians en route to the ninth no-hitter in Angels history, beating the Indians 3-1. You might notice that Santana gave up a run, which was unearned; if anyone could find a way to lose a no-hitter this year, it would be Santana, who entered the day at 5-8 despite a 3.69 ERA. Here's a look at the Angels no-hitters, from Bo Belinsky to Mark Langston and Mike Witt:

May 5, 1962 - Bo Belisnky beat the Orioles 2-0 in the Angels' second season. It was the first ever no-hitter at Dodger Stadium, which housed the Angels from 1962 to 1965.

July 3, 1970 - Clyde Wright beat the A's 4-0 at The Big A

May 15, 1973 - Nolan Ryan beats the Royals 3-0, with 12 strikeouts

July 15, 1973 - Exactly two months after his first no-hitter, Ryan threw his second, beating the Tigers 6-0. This was the game during which Norm Cash of Detroit famously came to the plate with a table leg instead of a bat, saying he couldn't hit Ryan either way.

September 28, 1974 - Ryan was at it again, beating the Twins 4-0. This was his first home no-hitter.

June 1, 1975 - Ryan threw his fourth and final no-hitter for the Angels, beating Baltimore 1-0. Amazingly, Ryan would throw three more no-hitters in his career, with the final one coming 17 years later.

September 30, 1984 - Mike Witt took advantage of the final day of the season and pitched a perfect game in Texas against the Rangers. Can't you just picture Rob Wilfong throwing the ball to Bobby Grich for the final out?

April 11, 1990 - Mark Langston made his first start as an Angel, and he made it count, with seven no-hit innings against Seattle, one of his former teams. Witt, six years after his perfect game, got the final six outs to complete the combined no-no.

Honorable mention: June 28, 2008 - Jered Weaver for six innings, and Jose Arredondo for two more, combined to allow no hits to the Dodgers. Unfortunately for the Angels, they allowed an unearned run and lost 1-0. Because the Angels only pitched eight innings in the complete game loss, they got no credit for the no-hitter.

Aside from Witt, Santana walked the fewest batters among the Angels no-hitters. Everyone else had three or more walks. Santana's was the fifth Angels no-hitter with 10 or more strikeouts, as Nolan Ryan did so three times and Mike Witt once.

Using 105 pitches, Ervin Santana pitched a no-hitter Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland. Santana had his slider working as he struck out 10, while walking just one. The closest the Indians came to getting a hit came in the 6th when Jason Kipnis hit a hard groundball up the middle that second baseman Howie Kendrick made a great diving stop to throw out Kipnis.

The pitching gem was the first no-hitter for an Angels pitcher in 27 years. Mike Witt tossed a perfect game against the Texas Rangers on September 30, 1984.

The Angels tied the game in the 5th when Peter Bourjos tripled to left to lead-off the inning. Bourjos scored on Mike Trout’s sacrifice fly to right.

The Halos took the lead in the 6th and added an insurance run in the 9th when Torii Hunter scored from third on Carlos Santana’s passed ball, just beating the tag at the plate with a nice head-first slide to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Bourjos plated Howie Kendrick with a single up the middle to put the Angels up 3-1.

After Erick Aybar's error in the first allowed Ezequiel Carrera to reach base, Santana retired 22 in a row before walking Lonnie Chisenhall with one out in the 8th. The Indians run was scored in the bottom of the first on an error, stolen base, groundout and then a passed ball.

The front desk of the Angels hotel was probably swamped with wake-up call requests Tuesday night as the Angels and Indians will play an early 12:05 (EDT) finale to their 3-game series Wednesday morning/afternoon. The early start time should be something the Angels might be getting used to as they'll play another afternoon game in Thursday's series opener in Detroit. The Angels are 20-15 in day games and 36-33 at night this season.

Getting up early for the Halos will be Ervin Santana (5-8, 3.69 ERA). Santana has been somewhat inconsistent this season as his record would indicate. Sporting a 3.69 ERA usually translates into at least a .500 season, however the right-hander has suffered through bouts of allowing home runs and receiving almost no run-support. Over his last four starts, Santana has managed to keep the ball in the park, getting the decision in 2 of 3 Angel wins. Prior to that four-game span, Santana had allowed 9 home runs in 6 starts and losing 4 straight.

In his last outing on July 22nd, Santana went 7.2 innings in Baltimore, allowing one run on 3 hits.

Making his second start of the 2011 season for Cleveland is David Huff (1-0, 0.00 ERA). The left-hander pitched seven shutout innings against Minnesota July 18th in his first start.
