Before Angels starter Jered Weaver took the field Tuesday night in Seattle, the Angels offense had scored more runs than they had in any of his previous three starts. But Weaver (8-4) would only need one.

The Angels' ace pitched his third complete game, and second shutout of the season in Seattle as the Angels took game 2 of their 3-games series against the Mariners by the score of 4-0. Weaver allowed 5 hits, while striking out 6 and walking one.

All of the Angels runs game in the first inning when the Halos sent nine men to the plate. Erick Aybar started the game with a lead-off double and scored when Torii Hunter singled to left. After a Bobby Abreu walk and a fielder's choice by Vernon Wells put runners on the corners, Howie Kendrick and Russell Branyan hit back-to-back singles to plate two more. Peter Bourjos finished off the scoring with an RBI double down the left field line to score Kendrick. Every Angel in the lineup had a hit in the game except for the recently hot-hitting Wells.

Tonight's win was the 4000th in the franchise's history. The back-to-back wins are the first for the Angels since May 29-30. In that stretch the club had gone 4-9, but has won 3 of their last four games.

If you have watched the Angels in June, you may have noticed the team has been struggling. The club is 3-8 in June, and has scored just 28 runs in 11 games this month, an average of 2.55 runs per contest. Jeff Sullivan at Baseball Nation has noticed too, and the reason is that the 2011 Angels have been uncharacteristically un-clutch.
↵
For the nine-year period from 2002 to 2010, the Angels overall ranked first in both batting and pitching in a rating on Fangraphs simply called Clutch, which measures performance in high-leverage situations. However, this year the Angels are number 5 in pitching and number 28 in offense. Per Sullivan:
↵
↵
This is not to suggest that the Angels don't or didn't possess some mysterious clutch ability. Two-and-a-half months in 2011 don't negate all the evidence from previous years. But for people who feel like this year's Angels haven't looked like the usual Angels - there's a reason for that. They haven't been themselves in important situations at the plate, and it's cost them games.
↵
↵
The Angels, who were in first place in the American League West as late as May 27, have dropped to four and half games out with their performance of late. They are in the very early stages of their longest road trip of the season, a 12-game sojourn that takes the Halos to Seattle, New York, Florida, and Los Angeles. If there was ever a time for the Angels to recapture some of their performance in the clutch, this would be it.
↵
For more news and information about the Angels, be sure to read the SB Nation blog Halos Heaven.

Angels' fans are holding their breath, hoping that the recent breakout performance by Vernon Wells is a positive sign of things to come. If Wells' season-long slump is over, the Angels could be heading into happy times and happier pennant races. Hitting .400 (6 for 15) with 2 home runs over his last four games, Wells' swing adjustment looks to be paying dividends - the kind of dividends the Halo pitching staff is looking for.

Jered Weaver (7-4, 2.24 ERA) looks to take advantage of Wells' recent offensive outburst as he's just 1-4 over his last 8 starts. In those starts, the Angel hitters provided Weaver with just 10 runs.

The Angels are 32-36 on the season, but have dropped nine of their last 12 games. Prior to Wells' two home runs last night, the Angels hadn't hit a home run in their previous 6 games. In seven career starts against the Mariners, Weaver has gone 4-1 while compiling a 1.48 ERA

Doug Fister (3-7, 3.40 ERA) takes the hill for the Seattle Mariners (34-33). The right-hander is suffering through the same lack of run-support as the Angel pitching staff. In his last 2 games, the Mariners have scored one run.

Who's Hot - Last 7 Games:
Bobby Abreu - 8 for his last 21 (.381), 2 2B
Howie Kendrick - 8 for his last 23 (.348), 4 2B
Vernon Wells - 6 for his last 21 (.286), 2 HR

Bendan Ryan- 7 for his last 23 (.304)

Who's Cold - Last 7 Games:
Mark Trumbo - 2 for his last 20 (.100)
Jeff Mathis - 1 for his last 10 (.100)
Alberto Callaspo - 0 for his last 11 (.000)
