Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to a career-high 28 games, as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-2 Monday night in the opening game of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium. Clayton Kershaw pitched seven strong innings for the win, snapping a two-game losing streak for the Dodgers. The Dodgers have beaten the Cubs in three of four meetings this season, scoring a total of 32 runs.

Ethier extended his streak with an infield single, an RBI hit to the hole at shortstop in the fifth inning off starter James Russell. The Dodgers scored all five runs off Russell, who lasted 4 2/3 innings and lost for the fourth time in as many starts. Kershaw allowed two runs and eight hits in his seven innings, striking out four while walking none.

Rookie Jerry Sands hit a two-run double in the Dodgers' three-run fifth inning rally that broke the game open, and his parents and grandfather were shown often during the broadcast cheering on Sands. The best part came when his grandfather was shown clapping with a 60+ year old Duke Snider model glove. Baseball is such a small world sometimes.

Vicente Padilla and Jonathan Broxton retired all six batters they faced in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the game. It was the first 1-2-3 save for Broxton since April 1. Chad Billingsley and Ryan Dempster face off Tuesday night in the second game of the series.

Andre Ethier extended his hitting streak to 28 games in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday night with an infield single off James Russell of the Chicago Cubs. The single by Ethier, a ground ball to the hole at shortstop, scored a run and made the score 5-1 in favor of the Dodgers at the time. Ethier is now merely halfway toward Joe DiMaggio's MLB record hitting streak of 56 games, set in 1941.

That Ethier got the hit off the left-handed Russell is a bit of news in itself, as Ethier has struggled against southpaws for most of his career. In fact, he started out this season 0-for-11 against left-handers, but has eight hits in his last 24 at-bats against southpaws.

Ethier's 28-game streak is the third-longest hitting streak in the 128-year history of the Dodgers. Only Willie Davis (31 games in 1969) and Zack Wheat (29 games in 1916) rank above Ethier in Dodgers' history.

The Los Angeles Dodgers look to put their weekend series loss behind them as they host the Chicago Cubs Monday night in the opener of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Clayton Kershaw starts for the Dodgers, while fill-in starter James Russell takes the hill for the Cubs. These two teams faced off at Wrigley Field on April 22-24, with the Dodgers winning two of three games.

Andre Ethier will look to extend his hitting streak, currently at 27 games, against the left-handed Russell. At 27 games, Ethier is tied with Ducky Medwick (1942) and Duke Snider (1953) for the third-longest hitting streak in Dodgers' history. The top streak 31 games, set by the late Willie Davis in 1969.

The offense for the Dodgers didn't have much of a weekend against the Padres, scoring just five runs in three games. The Dodgers lost two of three to the Padres, and they were a great catch from Tony Gwynn Jr. away from possibly getting swept. Kershaw has relatively struggled in his last three starts, allowing 12 runs in 18 2/3 innings. He hasn't picked up a win since April 11.

Russell, who was a relief pitcher last year and the beginning of this season, is making his fourth career start. He is 0-3 with a 11.12 ERA in his first three starts. He has faced the Dodgers four times in relief in his career, allowing one run and two hits in 5 2/3 innings. Russell has not lasted longer than four innings in any of his starts.
