The Angels have signed first-round pick Kaleb Cowart today, on the final day major league clubs are allowed to sign 2010 draft picks. The switch-hitting third baseman, drafted 18th overall by the Angels, attended Cook County high school in Adel, Georgia. Halos Heaven has a copy of the Angels press release:

"We’re pleased to officially welcome Kaleb to our organization," said [Angels Director of Scouting Eddie] Bane who has spent the past seven seasons as the Angels’ Director of Scouting. "He will add to the talented pieces already in our farm system, and will play a large role in the future success of the Angels."

Baseball America reported the deal for Cowart was well above the recommended slot bonus by MLB:

BA's Jim Callis has learned Cowart signed for a $2.3 million bonus, nearly $900,000 above the commissioner's office slot recommendation.

The Angels acquired the 18th pick as compensation, along with a supplemental first round pick, for Chone Figgins signing with the Mariners last winter.
