2012 Summer Olympics: Pau Gasol To Carry Spanish Flag In Opening Ceremonies

The 2012 Summer Olympics get underway Friday in London with the opening ceremonies, and featured prominently will be Los Angeles Lakers forward Pau Gasol. After Rafael Nadal pulled out of the Olympics with an injury, Gasol has been chosen to carry the Spanish flag during the opening ceremonies.

"It's a very very special moment," Gasol said in a video he released. "I'm very thankful and appreciative, and it's one of the sweetest moments of my career to be carrying the flag of my country with all our athletes, and representing my country in that very special moment."

This is the second Olympics for Gasol, who also earned a silver medal with Spain in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Gasol scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in a scrimmage against Argentina on Saturday.
