Magic/Bird Hits Broadway Spring 2012

For all of you die hard basketball/broadway fans out there, you are in for a real treat.

Coming to a theatre in the spring of 2012, Magic/Bird is a drama based on conversations with Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, showcasing their life-long rivalry, lasting friendship, and influential stories of these two superstars in the world of sport.

One sports most storied rivalries, Johnson and Bird fought for three NBA championships in the 1980s (and one NCAA championship in the 70's), creating a love/hate relationship throughout their careers as well as fueling the dihcotomic Lakers v. Celtics feud.

This groundbreaking play will be brought to you by playwright Eric Simonson of Lombardi fame, and directed by Tony Award nominated Thomas Kail. A barrage of theatre superstars has been brought together for the creative team, including David Korins (set), Howell Binkley (lighting), Paul Tazewell (costumes), and Nevin Steinberg (sound). Projection designer Wendell K. Harrington will weave historic NBA film footage throughout the play to add to the project's historic feel.

The NBA as well as Bird and Magic themselves will take part in the creative processes as well. And per usual, Magic had nothing but great things to say about Larry and the project:

"I have great love and respect for Larry Bird, and am elated that our personal and professional relationship will now be exposed to an even larger audience through this dramatic production," Johnson said in a statement.
