Could Dodger Stadium Host The NHL's Winter Classic?

The NHL's winter classic is one of the more exciting games the NHL puts on every year, mainly becuase it pits two top teams against not only each other but the elements as well, playing the game on an outdoor ice rink.

The league is yet to announce who will take place in the New Year's Day game as of yet, but Los Angeles Dodgers president Stan Kasten told the Los Angeles Times that the Los Angeles Kings and Dodger Stadium could be a nice fit, though the Winter Classic has never been played in a warm-weather city.

Kasten, the former president of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, noted that the technology certainly exists to keep the ice playable under the Southern California sun, but is uncertain if the league would want to host it in L.A. in the first place.

"Facility-wise, we could certainly handle it," Kasten said.

The Kings played an outdoor exhibition game in Las Vegas back in 1991 in which the ice withstood a game-time temperature of 85 degrees. More than two decades later, I'm sure it could be figured out to play in Chavez Ravine.

"They put a man on the moon," Dodgers Chairman Mark Walter said. "They can make it work."
