Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Ilya Bryzgalov turned away 36 shots and Phoenix generated just enough offense to shut down Los Angeles, 2-0, at Staples Center. Martin Hanzal and Lee Stempniak notched second period goals for the Coyotes, who snapped a two-game slide. Bryzgalov recorded his third shutout of the season and 19th of his career as Phoenix has won eight of its last 11 visits to Los Angeles.
Jonathan Quick stopped 13 shots in defeat for the reeling Kings, who have dropped 10 of their last 12 contests. Los Angeles has been held to two goals or fewer in seven of its 10 games during the month of January. Following a scoreless first period, the Coyotes struck toward the midway point of the second stanza to produce the game's only goals.
Hanzal's backhander at 8:48 got the visitors on the board and was upheld by video replay after it was ruled he swatted the puck out of the air below the level of the crossbar. Stempniak came down the right side and blistered a snapshot past Quick just 57 seconds later. Los Angeles pulled Quick with 1 1/2 minutes remaining in the game but never got a point blank shot on net.
The teams will conclude their home-and-home series Saturday in Phoenix...The Coyotes have won all three meetings so far this season...Ray Whitney picked up an assist on Hanzal's goal and has seven points in his last six games. Bryzgalov picked up his 14th win in 21 career matchups against Los Angeles while Quick fell for the eighth time in 14 meetings with the Coyotes...Mikkel Boedker of Phoenix played in his 100th career game.
