The LA Galaxy were in a position to take the win on the road, but had to settle for a draw in Kansas City. to the tune of 2-2. The last minutes were full of controversy, as Sporting Kansas City had a goal waved off for offside, and then was awarded a penalty for a handball in the box that equalized the game for Kansas City. Sean Franklin scored both goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
In the twenty fifth minute, Omar Gonzalez headed a clearance attempt back into the box, and Franklin stayed onside long enough to be able to poke it in with his right foot for his third goal of the season. In the 72', Julio Ceasar was able to equalize for Kansas City off a corner kick for his second goal of the season.
Just two minutes later, Sean Franklin put the Galaxy ahead again. Landon Donovan got play started on the left side, but it stalled in the middle. David Beckham saw Sean Franklin all alone on the right, and Franklin shot it right past the diving keeper. Franklin's brace was his first of the season.
Then in the 89', Sporting Kansas City had a free kick-header combination called offside and the goal waved off. Just one minute later, Frankie Hejduk was whistled for a handball in the box that gave Kansas City the chance to tie it with a penalty. Saunders went to his right, and Bravo shot it to his left.
Both keepers saved more than they let in, with the two teams combining for eleven shots on target. There were also three yellow cards for each team, including another David Beckham yellow arguing that the ball wasn't on the mark on the penalty kick.
Another storyline in this game was the pitch, which was full of holes and divots. For a brand new stadium which has been lauded for it's state of the art facilities, it was an embarrassment. There were divots large enough to cause the ball to come to a complete stop, it was sheer luck that a player wasn't injured because of it.
The Galaxy now come back to Los Angeles to face the Colorado Rapids on Friday. The following Tuesday, the Galaxy will travel to Mexico to take on Morelia in Champions League.
