2012 MLB Draft: Dodgers Have Gone Pitching Heavy In First Round

The Los Angeles Dodgers hold the No. 18 pick in the first round of the 2012 MLB Draft, which gets underway Monday with the opening round and supplemental round A televised by MLB Network. Given the draft history of Dodgers assistant GM and draft chief Logan White, look for the Dodgers to draft a pitcher with their first pick.

In 2002, the first draft White ran for the Dodgers, they picked Houston high school first baseman and pitcher James Loney with the 19th pick in the first round. In the nine years since, the Dodgers have used their first pick on a pitcher:

  • 2003: Chad Billingsley (first round, 24th overall)
  • 2004: Scott Elbert (first round, 17th overall)
  • 2005: Luke Hochevar (supplemental first round, 40th overall), did not sign
  • 2006: Clayton Kershaw (first round, seventh overall)
  • 2007: Chris Withrow (first round, 20th overall)
  • 2008: Ethan Martin (first round, 15th overall)
  • 2009: Aaron Miller (supplemental first round, 36th overall)
  • 2010: Zach Lee (first round, 28th overall)
  • 2011: Chris Reed (first round, 16th overall)

Hochevar (Tennessee), Miller (Baylor), and Reed (Stanford) were college pitchers, but the other six were high school pitchers. Will that trend continue on Monday?
