Dodgers will reportedly hire Mark McGwire as hitting coach

"Big Mac" will take his hitting knowledge to Los Angeles next season.

Joy R. Absalon-US PRESSWIRE

Mark McGwire will be the next hitting coach of the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to a report from the St. Louis Post Dispatch. After taking a couple of years off from baseball, McGwire has spent the last three years as the hitting instructor for the Cardinals, a team that has ranked near the top of the league in runs scored the last few seasons.

The decision for McGwire to move west is likely due to family considerations. He currently lives with his family in Orange County and has said he wants to be around as his children grow up. After spending so many years on the road as a player in Major League Baseball, it's tough to fault him.

The Dodgers could benefit from a new hitting coach. The team ranked 13th in the National League in runs scored and struggled to score consistently despite bringing in Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez and others at the trade deadline.

L.A. is yet to confirm the report, although it looks like it's close to a done deal.
