Dodgers hopes for NL playoffs depend on St. Louis Cardinals

The Dodgers playoff hopes are dwindling, as they need to win out and have the Cardinals drop both of their remaining games with the Reds in order to qualify for a tiebreaker that would be played on Thursday in L.A.

The Los Angeles Dodgers' NL playoff hopes are slim to none, with their chances resting on the St. Louis Cardinals as they wrap up a three-game series at home with the Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers have a shot though, albeit a small one.

Los Angeles, winners of six in a row and coming off a dramatic 3-2 walk-off win over the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, have to win out, and the St. Louis Cardinals have to lose both of their remaining games with the NL Central champion Reds for the Dodgers to even have a chance at playing in a tiebreaker at home on Thursday. A Dodgers loss or a Cardinals win means the Dodgers can start booking tee times for Thursday.

Tonight in St. Louis, the Cardinals will send Chris Carpenter (0-1, 3.27) to the mound to face Mat Latos (13-4, 3.52) and the Reds. Game time is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. PT.

The Dodgers will pin their hopes on Chris Capuano (12-11, 3.69) as he takes the hill against Barry Zito (14-8, 4.19) and a Giants team that has a playoff birth and an NL West championship clinched. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. PT.
