Remembering 9/11: Vin Scully's Speech 10 Years Ago

It was 10 years ago Sunday that the world was shaken by the events of September 11, 2001. It was day, and a time, in history that none of us will ever forget. It put the sports world on hold for the better part of a week, as both baseball and football postponed several games. On Monday, September 17, 2001, the Los Angeles Dodgers resumed their season with a game against the San Diego Padres.

Vin Scully opened the game with an emotional speech that was played both on the television broadcast and at Dodger Stadium:

"The President of the United States has said it is time to go back to work," Scully said. "And so, despite a heavy heart, baseball gets up out of the dirt, brushes itself off, and will follow his command, hoping in some small way to inspire the nation to do the same."
