Hold That Streak: Sore Elbows Sideline Andre Ethier, Jonathan Broxton

Players are dropping like flies at Dodger Stadium! First came news Wednesday morning that closer Jonathan Broxton, who was removed last night amid decreasing velocity and walking two batters on eight pitches, was shut down with a sore left elbow. Broxton will undergo an MRI today, and may or may not go on the disabled list. Then, less than an hour before game time, Andre Ethier, he of the 29-game hitting streak, was a late scratch from the lineup with left elbow inflammation.

Keep in mind that Casey Blake is on the disabled list and will miss four to six weeks after surgery to fix an elbow infection. Jay Gibbons, making his first start of the season for the Dodgers, will play right field in place of Ethier, who had started the first 31 games of the season. Tony Gwynn Jr. will play left field and bat leadoff.
