Magic Johnson As Dodgers Owner? Don't Get Your Hopes Up

Right now is definitely an interesting time to be a Dodgers fan. With commissioner Bud Selig stepping in and taking control of the Dodgers, appointing Tom Schieffer to oversee the day-to-day operations of the club, the writing on the wall is plain to see that Frank McCourt's days as Dodgers owner are numbered. While it should be noted that the Dodgers are in fact not yet for sale, that hasn't stopped potential suitors from weighing in on potentially buying the franchise, including Magic Johnson.

The former Lakers great was a guest last week on The Covino & Rich Show on Sirius XM radio, and was asked if he was interested in buying the Dodgers. "You know, people here in LA want me to make a run for the Dodgers," Johnson said. "I will sit back and see what happens and if somebody approaches me and wants a partner or wants me to be involved, I’ll take a look at it. ‘Cause I love baseball and I love the Dodgers."

Johnson has had a very successful post-basketball career, running several successful businesses. As the face of the franchise, it's hard to do any better than Magic. But, what Dodger fans should want first out of their next owner is someone who wants to invest in the team, not necessarily a popular celebrity, whether it be Johnson, Oscar De La Hoya, or whomever. Not that Johnson wouldn't be an effective owner, but it's probably best for Dodgers fans not to set their expectations too high.
