The list of Major League Baseball Type A and B free agents from Elias has been obtained by the fine folks at MLB Trade Rumors, the official rankings to determine compensation should players sign elsewhere. If arbitration is offered, Type A free agents net a first round pick from the new team (or second round, or possibly later depending on place in the draft and other ranked free agents signed) plus a supplemental pick between the first and second rounds. Type B free agents net only a supplemental pick.
↵Here are the Type A and B free agents for both the Dodgers and Angels:
↵Type A
↵- ↵
- Ted Lilly, Dodgers (already re-signed for three years, $33 million) ↵
Type B
↵- ↵
- Rod Barajas, Dodgers ↵
- Hideki Matsui, Angels ↵
-
Scott Podsednik, Dodgers (has a $2 million mutual option for 2011, with a $100,000 buyout)
↵
Hiroki Kuroda is also listed as a Type B free agent, but he had it written into his contract that he would become a free agent once his contract ran out. With three years of service time, the way Kuroda becomes a free agent is through the Dodgers not tendering him a contract, and thus not offering him the arbitration necessary to receive compensation picks.
↵The deadline to offer arbitration to free agents is November 23, and the deadline for players to accept or decline those offers are November 30.
