According to several reports, the Los Angeles Angels completed a trade on Thursday night to acquire relief pitcher Ernesto Frieri from the San Diego Padres.
The Angels sent two minor-leaguers to the Padres, Alexi Amarista and Donn Roach, in exchange for Frieri. The Padres made the move to strengthen its middle infield. Amarista is currently playing in Triple-A, but is close to the majors according to comments made by Padres GM Josh Byrnes.
Frieri, a right-hander, has a 2.31 ERA in eleven appearances for the Padres. He is currently in his third season in the majors. He has a career ERA of 2.33 and a WHIP of 1.25. Frieri is expected to join the team on Friday for the team's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Angels hope the three-year veteran can improve its bullpen. Jordan Walden started the season as the Angels' closer, but was demoted after allowing four runs in seven appearances.
