Jered Weaver Suspended Six Games, Mike Scioscia One For Throwing At Alex Avila's Head

Jered Weaver threw a temper tantrum on Sunday in Detroit, and the price for that tantrum has just been levied. Major League Baseball has suspended the Angels' ace for six games for intentionally throwing at Alex Avila's head in Sunday's loss to the Tigers. Manager Mike Scioscia was also suspended for one game.

Scioscia will serve his suspension tonight as the Angels open a three-game series with the Twins in Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Weaver, however, will appeal his suspension.

At issue on Sunday was Magglio Ordonez standing at home plate to watch his home run in the third inning, though in fairness he claimed he was waiting to see whether the ball was fair or foul. Then in the seventh inning. Carlos Guillen homered and was a tad too celebratory for Weaver's liking; Detroit manager Jim Leyland said Guillen was "styling".

The next batter was Avila, and Weaver threw a ball over his head, which resulted in his ejection. Weaver was also fined an undisclosed amount.
