Carlos Pequero hit a 2-out, bases loaded ground ball in the seventh inning that caromed off of second base and into center field to score Chone Figgins and Justin Smoak breaking a scoreless tie.
Ervin Santana (3-7) took the heart-breaking loss after keeping the Mariners scoreless for 6.2 innings. It was the fluky ground ball in the 7th that ended his chances of getting the win after allowing eight hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Sometimes the ball bounces into center field and you get the loss, sometimes the bounce gets you a deserved victory. Eric Bedard (4-4) had the bounce go his way after he went 7 innings without allowing a run on 3 hits. Bedard struck out five and didn’t give up any walks as the Mariners have now won in Bedard’s last six starts, although he is just 3-0 in those starts.
The Angels are off Thursday as they head to New York to face the Mets over the weekend.
