The Angels once again failed to accomplish something they haven't done in 6 tries this season; beat the Boston Red Sox. Dan Haren held the Sox scoreless through 5 innings until surrendering three straight 2-out hits in the sixth leading to a 2-1 Red Sox lead. The 7-3 loss is the 15th loss dating back to last season.
The Angels lone run until a meaningless rally in the 9th came on Mark Trumbo's 5th home run of the season in the second. The Angels scored twice in the ninth off of Jonathan Papelbon when they lead off the inning with three straight hits and a Trumbo sacrifice fly before a Jeff Mathis strike out and a Peter Bourjos ground out ended the game.
The Red Sox put the game out of reach in 8th when Adrian Gonzalez and David Ortiz went back-to-back off of Haren and Hisanori Takahashi. That was quickly followed two batters later when Marco Scutaro hit the third home run of the inning, a 2-run shot to center, making the score 7-1.
Haren went 7 innings, giving up 4 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 8, but is now win-less in his last three starts.
The Angels and Red Sox play the third game of the 4-game series tomorrow when Ervin Santana and Josh Beckett square off. Game time is 4:10 PDT
