Earlier in the week we looked at the Angels' payroll, which was north of $130 million after reaching agreements with six of their eight arbitration-eligible players. Now, with the Vernon Wells trade, the Angels have moved into a new stratosphere. Even factoring in shedding the salaries of Mike Napoli (between $5.3 million and $6.1 million) and Juan Rivera ($5.25 million), adding Wells' $23 million price tag for 2011 pushes the Angels' 2011 payroll over $140 million.
The Angels have $132.9 million committed to 17 players, plus Gary Matthews Jr., to whom the Angels owe $11 million this year. Once the Angels reach agreement with Jered Weaver, they will have between $140.265 million and $141.7 million committed to 18 players. Once the remaining seven roster spots are filled, the Angels' payroll will likely be somewhere in the $145-150 million range.
