The LA Galaxy face the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium Wednesday with survival on the line, but the Earthquakes have a slight advantage going into the second leg of the semifinal series. Coach Frank Yallop's team scored a surprise goal on LA late in the first leg of the series to win 1-0 and has that cushion to work with going into Wednesday's game.
The Sunday series opener was low-scoring compared to the season series between San Jose and LA. The Earthquakes 1-0 victory was a defensive battle compared to 16 total goals scored in three regular season games between the two teams.
Yallop told the MLS's website that more defense will be needed to advance to the MLS Western Conference Finals.
The winner between the Earthquakes and Galaxy will play the Seattle Sounders or Real Salt Lake.
