Peter Bourjos hit a bases loaded, bottom of the ninth, game winning single Tuesday night to give the Angels a 5-4 opening game win over the Chicago White Sox. The win is the Angels fifth straight, matching a season high, plus it draws them to within 3.5 games of the division leading Texas Rangers who lost 11-5 to Boston.

Jordan Walden (4-3) pitched a perfect ninth for the win after Ervin Santana allowed 4 runs on 9 hits over eight innings, striking out 4 and walking one.

The Angels took an early lead when Peter Bourjos scored on a Juan Pierre error in the first inning. Howie Kendrick made it 2-0 with his eleventh home run of the season in the second inning. After Chicago tied the ballgame in the third, Torii Hunter singled to center to score Maicer Izturis to regain the lead.

The White Sox scored lone runs in the fifth and eighth to once again tie the game setting the stage for Bourjos’ single past a drawn in White Sox infield scoring ERick Aybar for the Halo win.

The Angels face the Chicago White Sox in a quick, 2-games series starting Tuesday night.

The Angels will be looking for their season high-tying fifth straight win tonight as they face the Chicago White Sox in Anaheim in a two-game series. Over the weekend the Angels pulled off a three game sweep of the struggling Baltimore Orioles that has put them back in the hunt for the AL West title. In the series win over Baltimore, the Halos took advantage multiple scoring opportunities and outscored their opponent 24-12, something the inconsistent Angles offense has struggled with all season.

Ervin Santana (9-9, 3.12 ERA) will look to bounce back from his first loss since June 21st. In his last start, the right-hander allowed a season high 10 hits over 7.2 innings in a 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers.

Mark Buehrle (10-6, 3.14 ERA) too is looking to bounce back from his most recent start, a 4-1 loss to the Cleveland Indians. In that game, Buehrle surrendered a season-worst 12 hits over 7.3 innings.

FUN FACTS:

Two of the Angels’ youth movement homered Friday night, but it was the Halo’s Father Time who led the way in their 8-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. In the first game of their 3-game series in Anaheim, Peter Bourjos and just returned from Double-A Arkansas Mike Trout went deep to help the Angels win for the second night in a row, but Torii Hunter homered twice to show everyone the old guys can still swing a stick too.

Hunter’s first home run came in the Angels four-run first inning when he sent a Jo-Jo Reyes (6-10) pitch to deep left scoring Alberto Callaspo and Howie Kendrick. Kendrick had singled to score Peter Bourjos after the Angels’ centerfielder had doubled to leadoff the game. With the first inning homer, Hunter extended his hitting streak to 17 games.

Hunter homered again in the seventh, driving in Callaspo for his fourth and fifth RBI of the game.

Dan Haren won for the seventh time in his last eight decisions by allowing three runs on nine hits over seven innings. Haren (13-6) struck out eight and walked none – this was the tenth time Haren has not allowed a walk in his start.

The Halo win allows them to keep pace with the AL West division leading Texas Rangers. The Angels are 6 games behind after Texas won in Chicago by the score of 7-4.

The Angels host the the American League's worst road team for 3-game weekend series.

The Baltimore Orioles may have the worst record in the AL, but that doesn't mean the Angels should take them lightly. The last time these two teams met in Anaheim, the Orioles came away with a three game sweep last August 27-29. The Orioles and Angels played a 3-game set in Baltimore earlier this season which saw the Halos take 2 of three. Fortunately 2011 may play out differently for the Oriole/Angel matchup in 2011 as Baltimore has the league's worst road record (18-39), and have lost 20 of their last 25.

Dan Haren will open the series for the Halos, hoping to build on their dramatic, 2-1 walkoff win over the Texas Rangers Thursday night. Haren (12-6, 2.95 ERA) is 1-0 for the month of August, but has been as effective his last two outings, compiling a 3.32 ERA in 21.2 innings. In his last start Aug. 14th in Toronto, the right-hander allowed 3 runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out 5 and walking none. Maybe a home start will do the trick for Haren - in his last five home games he has gone 4-0 with a 2.41.

The Orioles will send Jo-Jo Reyes (6-9, 5.30 ERA) to the hill in place of Jeremy Guthrie, who is suffering shoulder soreness. Reyes recently joined the Oriole rotation after being claimed off of waiver from the Toronto Blue Jays. In two starts for the Orioles, Reyes has gone 1-1 with a 4.22 ERA.

FUN FACTS:

With his 9th inning single, Torii Hunter extended his current hitting streak to 16 games.

The Angels are 16-17 since the All-Star break.

Mark Trumbo is hitting .383 with seven home runs and 17 RBI in his last 16 home games.

With last night's win, the Angels avoided being swept at home in a 4-game series against the Rangers.

It was just the third time this season the Halos have won after trailing after seven innings They are now 3-44.

Angels hope Jered Weaver can end their recent slide and keep their slim playoff chances alive.

With Wednesday night's 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers, the Angels now face the almost insurmountable task of catching one of baseball's hottest teams with just 37 games remaining. The seven game deficit the Angels must overcome is the largest gap the two teams have had this season. It's almost unbelievable that a week ago the Halos were just 1.5 games behind and had been no more than 2 games back for almost two weeks. But while the Angels were going 1-7, the Rangers were winning 9 of their last ten games.

Looking to keep the Angels' slim playoff hopes alive in the final game of the 4-game set, Angel ace Jered Weaver (14-6, 2.13 ERA) will try to rebound from his worst start of the season. Last Saturday the lanky right-hander allowed eight earned runs in 4.2 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, ballooning his ERA from 1.78 to 2.13. In that contest, Weaver allowed 3 home runs. The last time he had done that was May 18, 2010 - against the Texas Rangers. Weaver has done well against the Rangers at home in his career as he's posted a 7-0 mark while compiling a 2.32 ERA in eleven starts. Back on July 21st he went seven innings against Texas, getting the 1-0 win by allowing seven hits and striking out six.

The Rangers will turn to Colby Lewis (11-8, 4.01 ERA) to set one of the final nails in the Angels' coffin. Lewis is 5-1 over his last 6 decisions, while the Rangers have won 7 of his last nine starts. Last Saturday in Oakland, the right-hander got the win by going 6.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out 8 and walking none.

FUN FACTS:

Last night's loss was the first time the Angels have lost three straight at home.

Four of the next 7 games against the Rangers will be played in Anaheim.

The club is 2-44 when trailing after 7 innings.

The Angels have signed 39 of the 49 players selected in this season's first year players draft, including their first 13 picks.

Ervin Santana managed to contain the hot-hitting Texas Rangers for four innings, even after being staked to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but that all ended in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Texas scored a run in the fifth on a Josh Hamilton RBI single to center to score Elvis Andrus, tied the game in the 6th on Mitch Moreland’s 14th home run of the season, and took the lead when Ian Kinsler hit a bloop, two-out, bases loaded single to left to score Nelson Cruz and Mike Napoli. The Rangers had loaded the bases with none out before Santana struck out both Yorvit Torrealba and Endy Chavez before getting within one strike of ending the inning.

The Halo loss drops the club to 7 games behind the Rangers with just 38 remaining to play. It was also the Angels’ fifth loss in-a-row, while Texas has won 6 straight and 9 of 10.

Santana (9-9) went 7.2 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits, while striking out four and walking four. The right-hander had won his last five decisions while compiling a stunning 0.84 ERA. However, with the exception of Andrus, each of the Ranger hitters were able to get at least one base hit. Andrus did walk twice in five plate appearances.

Ranger starter C.J. Wilson improved to 12-5 after holding the Angels to two runs (one earned) on five hits over 7 innings. Wilson allowed just one hit after Howie Kendrick’s two-out single in the third inning. The Texas lefty gave up two runs in the first when Peter Bourjos hit his league-leading (tied with Curtis Granderson) 9th triple of the season, and scored on Kendrick’s ground out. After Torii Hunter reached first on an Andrus error, Mark Trumbo doubled to deep center giving the Halos an early 2-0 lead.

Howie Kendrick brought the Angel to within one run with his 9th home run of the season in the eighth innings.

Torii Hunter extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the sixth inning.
