Ducks Fall To Sharks, 5-2 In San Jose

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Dany Heatley scored twice and added an assist, as the San Jose Sharks stayed hot with a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks at HP Pavilion.

Joe Thornton had three assists for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five games and scored 20 goals in that span. The only loss in the stretch was a 4-0 decision against Calgary.

Antero Niittymaki made 22 saves as San Jose also resumed its dominance of the Ducks -- the Sharks won five of the six matchups last season.

Curtis McElhinney allowed all five goals on 41 shots for the Ducks, who were coming off Friday's home loss to New Jersey.

San Jose got the jump on Anaheim with two goals early in the first period.

Heatley scored his first just 36 seconds in. Just after a faceoff, Dan Boyle ripped a shot from the right point and McElhinney blocked it. But the puck bounced to his right, where Thornton pushed it out front for Heatley's quick backhand swipe into an open net.

A few minutes later with the Sharks on the power play, Logan Couture spun in the circle and fired a wrister through traffic, making it a 2-0 contest at 4:45.

San Jose was back on the power play early in the second period, when Joe Pavelski gathered the puck to the right of the goal. He managed to get a pass through the legs of Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman, and Heatley one timed it past McElhinney from the left side at 2:08.

Niclas Wallin and Patrick Marleau scored later in the period to make it a 5-0 game, and San Jose held on in the third period, though Anaheim did get power- play goals from Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.

Thornton recorded his second three-assist game of the season (also October 23 at Edmonton). He has five goals and 10 assists through nine games...Teemu Selanne assisted on both Ducks goals.
