The first round of the 2012 BMW Championship is in the books and scores went low Thursday with 50 of the 70 players in the field shooting under par.
Current FedEx Cup leader Rory McIlroy is one of four players tied for the lead at 8-under. Bo Van Pelt, Webb Simpson and Graham DeLaet also shot 8-under 64s on Thursday. Tiger Woods is one-stroke back of the leaders, tied with Vijay Singh for fifth place at 7-under. Woods got off to a quick start Thursday with birdies on five of his first seven holes. He entered the tournament in third place in the FedEx Cup standings, trailing McIlroy and Nick Watney.
Phil Mickelson began the BMW Championship in ninth place in the FedEx Cup but after a 3-under 69 on Thursday he has some ground to make up to catch the leaders. Mickelson is currently tied for 29th place, but he closed strong Thursday with back-to-back birdies to end his round.
